Hi to all of you!

I own a hard disk of 120 Gb partitioned as follow:

drive C: 20 Gb
drive D: 100 Gb

Here's the my prob:
Windows Explorer says that my D: partition is almost full, 5 Gb left, but
when I select all the files and folders I have in the D: partition its size
is of about 22 GB. Do you know where the rest (about 73 GB) of my D:
partition is? What is it used for since my files and folders fill it up to
22 GB?

Thnaks for your help

Fabrizio

System Restore info (System Volume Info??) can be using the disk space of D:

Also, your Windows may have the Windows Virtual Memory page file on D:.

If you are using Norton SystemWorks/Utilites, then Norton Protected Recycle
Bin is keeping a lot of deleted files (normally exes, coms and dlls) incase
you would need to restore them.

Hi Fabrizio,

Here are some possible causes......

1) Your D: partition is 100GB but if formated as FAT32 it might be only 32GB
or less.
The remainder is inaccessible. Format as NTFS to use the full size.

2) Selecting all files leaves out all system and hidden files.
Go to Folder Options and enable visibility of system / hidden files and
folders (2 options).
Try again to select all files.

3) Disable System Restore for drive D.
Right Click This Computer, then Properties, System Restore, select D:
and disable System Restore.
The Restore Space will be freed.

4) Your system has been 'tagged', that is, used for storing warez, mp3,
movies etc.
Removal might be a bit difficult.

Hope this helps,

If you used a FAT 32 system don't look forward to the full 100GB on the D:
Except ofcourse NTFS.

If youre using Norton antivirus, purge norton proctected files in trash bin.

Have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden files, and *not* Hide
Protected mode ones and check again. Some possible are hidden
files/folders like System Volume Information (restore points) - while
that ought not to take more than 12% of a drive it is a possibility.
But it is difficult to think of things which would add up to that much

Check at Control Panel - Admin Tools - Computer Management, select Disk
Management and look lower right for the graphic of the drive. Make sure
that the size of the partitions is in fact what you think it is. A
notional 120 GB drive (measured in decimal billion) will only total
around 111 of the 'binary' GB that the system uses - so I'm a bit
suspicious that you have not the partitioning that you think you have

This sounds like a classic problem when people go to larger drives.
Ask in the newsgroup comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.storage . Include
in our post the OS, what service packs are installed for the OS,
the machine (including CPU), year of its manufacture, year or version
of any BIOS update.
