"Clean" install of Vista RTM 6000 x32 on HP zd8000 laptop.

No IE icon on desktop. No option to put it there that I can find?

Where did it go? Antitrust issues, again?

P.S. Please don't tell me the following because I already know:

(1) Yes, I have an IE icon on my quicklaunch bar but that is *not* the same
as the one you get when you right-click the unique IE 7 icon on desktop --
right-click yours if you have one -- see the option to start without add
ons, go to (Internet) Properties, etc?

(2) And, yes, you can drag the IE7 icon from your program menu and sort of
get the same results -- not quite. Try it.

(3) Do not tell me to right-click on the desktop, choose Personalise, and
then click Choose Desktop Icons. IE ain't one of my choices.

(4) Finally, If you upgraded when installing Vista, rather than doing a
clean install, and you already had a "genuine" IE 7 desktop icon, you still
do. I still do on a system where I upgraded to RTM from Build 5744.

Everybody with me? lol

So, how do I get my "genuine" IE 7 icon back on my laptop? This is *not* a
bug report -- it's a nit! lol

Click the Start Orb, click on All Programs, right click on IE (second item),
and choose Send To...Desktop.

It will also appear in the Quick Launch area automatically on first use if
you have the QL enabled.

Colin, your advice is always impeccable and you're incredibly helpful in
this group, so I was sure you had the solution, but ...

All that creates is a "regular" shortcut on the desktop for IE7 (complete
with the damned shortcut arrow) which also does *NOT* behave like the unique
IE desktop item when right-clicked in previous Windows versions.

Please re-read my msg and test your fix to see if you get the "genuine" IE7
desktop icon that, when right-clicked, brings up options like start without
add-ons, etc.

Is it possible you customized the send-to option?

Hi Robert,

I will attach a .reg file that all you will have to do is click on it to
run, then reboot and the IE icon will be there on your desktop.
If you are leery about this file (which I would be) just right click on it
and choose edit and you will see what it does.

Marty

Just post the contents of the reg file in the news group. Security settings
in Windows Mail will not let me open the reg file.

Dale

Marty:

Thank you, but both Windows Live Mail and Windows Mail (Vista version) block
..reg keys -- I am not allowed to edit, save, open, breathe on etc. a file
with that attachment.

Would you please cut/paste the text of the .reg key itself into a reply and
I'll roll my own.

Thank you.

Do I assume from your interest that I am not the only one who lost the
genuine IE icon on their desktop when doing a clean install of Vista RTM?

Sorry Robert, here you go:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel]
"{871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D}"=dword:00000000

Marty

MS did make this change for the RTM.

Thank you. That should work. It matches the registry key I have on the
system where I *do* have the IE7 desktop item.

Thank you.

Now, the mystery is, why did MS do this for clean installs of the RTM? It
just had to be antitrust issues again (the DOJ lawsuit, the pending EU
stuff). Oh heck, I'm a lawyer and I'm always suspicious that some other
lawyer made MS do something stupid just because they happen to (ahem,
allegedly) have a monopoly on PC desktop operating systems. :-}

Thanks again.

Colin, notice the difference. The "Send to" solution creates a shortcut.
Right-click on the shortcut and what's missing? Internet Options. If you
drag instead, the Start Menu's "Internet" to the Desktop [creating a
shortcut] and then right-click on it .. what's there? The right-click menu
list includes "Internet Properties".

Another thing one can do is drag Internet Properties out of the Conrtol
Panel (Classic view) and onto the Start menu. Then one is just a click or
two away from Internet Options and no need to right-click.

I think you're right about antitrust issues. Enjoy your Icon :)
The .reg file was the same way that tweakui worked.

Marty -- you gave me a virus! lol

Just kidding. Worked like a charm. Thanks.

For anyone else, copy those entries to a plain text file (use notepad, for
example), name the file anythingyouwant.reg , right-click, choose merge,
disregard the warning that you are about to risk your life, and then
log-off/log-on, reboot, or do whatever else is your favorite trick to get
Windows to re-read the registry.

The "special" and "genuine" IE icon will be back on your desktop.

F the DOJ! lol

Actually, I don't think that will work --- they'll never get the file out of
the .zip. (I use Winzip 10 but I think Windows was doing the blocking).

Right-clicking the .reg key while still inside the .zip presents the Merge
option so maybe .... but I won't merge something I can't view first (no
offense meant and none taken, I hope).

Security in Vista is for real. It may even be overkill. :)

Anyway, as I said in another msg, I created my own .reg key from Marty's msg
text and it worked fine.

Nice try!

I just downloaded it with no dire warnings whatsoeve from Windows Mail.
Tools > Options > Security and uncheck that box ;-)

Just tried and you're right. I guess the best way would be post it as "any
file.reg.zip" and say drop the ".zip" after downloading.
