Hi,

i am using VuseScan 8.3.85 but can not find anything like 'exposure
clipping %' options. where is it? and how to compare this function
with 'lock exposure'?

thanks.

Ed got rid of it a few months ago as it was pretty much useless.

Try lock exposure and look at the histograms to figure out the right
exposure. (If you're clipping, try increasing or decreasing
exposure).

i beileved 'lock exposure' for a couple of weeks until i found the
histogram i saw in preview does not agree with final histogram i saw
after scan. actually, the histogram in preview are narrow and shifted
towards left end, while the histogram after scan is usually span on
the whole scale. you know, if one wanna play around 'lock exposure',
she ususally press the preview button many times and use the
infomation on the histogram to adjust final exposure value.

can anyone please explain why the preview histogram look like that?

thanks

sorry, my points might not be so clear, so i list them below:

1, if the preview histogram is not correct, so the 'lock exposure'
will not be much of use.
2, i want to know, why the preview histogram is so much different with
scan histogram? ( of course, i compare raw histograms in both preview
and scan )

"you know, if one wanna play around 'lock exposure',

Is the histogram set to "raw" or "image" or another mode?
The raw histogram should be pretty much the same if you lock the
exposure, then preview, and then scan. A normal preview without the
exposure locked should be different. If it's not the same then either
you have other settings that are stretching or changing it that you
should disable, or you found a bug and need to email Ed.

Woody: Ed deleted the feature sometime during the 8.3.xx series
(maybe even as early as the 8.2.xx series). As I remember, he
indicated it was not used by by many folks in their daily scanning
workflow.

You could look through the Changes from Previous version in the Help
file to figure out when it occurred.

If you make a good case, he might bring it back.

thank you Roger. it is exactly my case. i just dont't know why the
raw image is not right in preview unless i enabled the 'lock
exposure'?

i hope so :-)

The preview is done at a nominal exposure, say "1". Based on this
exposure the scanner software figures out (guesses) the right exposure
for the final scan to keep the scan histogram to the right without
clipping (say 2). Those two histograms are very different.
Now if you lock exposure at 2 and do a preview and then scan with it
locked at 2 the exposure should look the same! Some scanners can
pretty much scan everything at the same exposure. I scan most of my
slides at one exposure and always use the advanced workflow to lock
negative exposure and set color balance.

Also, the clip exposure % feature just told it how many pixels it was
okay to clip. If I recall, it was quite conservative. I do this
manually locking exposure, using the preview histograms.

Good luck!
Roger

Did you email Ed Hamrick with a specific request to bring back the
exposure clipping %?

Thank you Roger, i now understand.

and here is another question you might like to answer:

if i use 'right click in the preview' to set the color balance, which
indeed set the r/g/b brightness perspectively to a value from 0 to 1,
and then press 'refresh' button ( if autorefresh is disabled ), i hope
to see changes in histogram. however, sometimes i found the histogram
changed itself but sometimes it did not! is it a bug or anything
i've missed?

If color balance is set to none you won't see any changes. If
histogram type is set to raw you should not see any changes. Make
sure histogram is set to image and color balance is set to manual.
