Is there a place on line with folder equivilants between xp and vista?
For instance... Documents adn Settings is gone... where is all the stuff
that was in there like application data, user data etc.? Where is the
start menu now?

2. Is there a way to set up vista for one user so stuff isn't spread out
so much.

thanks

Vista is a different OS and uses a different file structure than XP and
Win2k.
Documents and Settings is now "users", there is an "appdata" directory in
each user folder, along with other directories.
Searching and exploring these directories, you'll be able to figure out
where the start menu folder and others are.

Have you tried doing a search for 'start menu'? It was one of the first
things that I did, and I know have a shortcut to it on my desktop..

Thought I had things figured out But...

Did a regular install but it kept a windows.old anyway. There is a
folder 'John" under desktop, another under users, and 3 of them under
windows.old. I have only one log on and that is "John," All my data (A
lot) was backed up to 2 or 3 locations... weird. So I moved everything I
could to the Documents folder under John under users. Then I deleted all
the other "Documents" folders on the disk.

Well... when I re-booted every folder named "Documents" wasgone. Go
figure. And all the data was gone too. That's ok because it is all
backed up.

Then I tried to delete all the windows.old folders because they were
taking up so much space but it wouldn't let me.

What I'm trying now is to just create a new folder "Documents" and copy
all my data into it and see what happens. But I don't know whether to
use the "John" under desktop or the "John" under users. What's the point
of having two of them?

And how do you get reid of all the reduntant stuff in windows.old?

Thanks

John

Have you tried a System Restore? This would be the easiest way to recover
the folders that were deleted.

The "John" user folders appear twice in Windows Explorer for convenience.
The view under Desktop is always visible and is simply a mirror copy of the
actual folders under C:\Users\John. Whatever action you perform on the
mirror copy also effects the actual folders.

The following website has a list of all the default XP shell folders with
their new name/location in Vista.

Why do I get an Access Denied error when trying to open a folder?:

After you have copied everything you need to save from the Windows.old
folder, it's best to simply delete that folder.
