When you double click on a file is not associated to an application, it
brings up an Open With dialog with a long list of programs. Where is
this list kept? I have two that have the same name in the list but each
opens a different program. I'd like to rename them in the list. I have
this problem both on Windows XP and 2000.

Open up Windows Explorer. Click on the Tools Menu, pick Folder Options. Click on the File Types tab. You can change the default associations for the various file types here.

Unfortunately I've looked there. The file extensions "pl" or "prl" do
not appear in the extension list. "Perl Command Line Interpreter" does
not appear in the File Type list. But "Perl Command Line Interpreter"
does appear twice (for different versions of perl) in the Open As list.

You're looking to launch one version of the command line interpreter every time you double-click on a .pl or .prl file? If so, simply add the .pl and .prl extensions as file types. Then browse to the .exe file for your interpreter program so that it will launch it with these file extensions.

A good idea but it's not quite what I need. Currently in Open With there
are two entries labeled "Perl Command Line Interpreter". One is for Perl
5.001 and the other is for Perl 5.6.1. I would like to change the
entries to say "Perl 5.001 Command Line Interpreter" and "Perl 5.6.1
Command Line Interpreter" so that I can tell which is which. I need them
both for testing scripts. When I searched the registry I only found one
entry, so I conclude that that is not where Open With gets it s
description information.
