Please post name of "free public server" that actually carries this
group and carries it in full with all parts. No-one (not even google)
can find one so no wonder I have seen posts asking if it is dying.

TIA

It can be difficult to connect to, sometimes, yeah.

I suggest you change "sometimes" to "always". So much so it is
IMO a totally useless server.

Unless your newsreader has something like a "check server" every
five minutes. Running perhaps all day.

My Hamster might be able to repeatedly server check, just this one
server, but I don't feel like the usual jumping through hoops step of
working out how to write/install the appropriate script.

Regards, John.

Has it gotten to be that bad? Wow. I used to use it all the time for
fills -- often took about 10 tries to get on. I didn't realise that it
has degraded to that extent.

Oh well, you do get what you pay for.

You'd better check all the time or it might take very long. :-)
Mike allows that you "hammer" the server as long as you don't (try to) make
more than 2 connections simultanously.
