It looks like my 980xt is busted. And because I got it used, I'm sure
ATI will not repair it under warrentee.
I've sent them an email asking if they would look at it, but I
have not heard back from them. (just 2 hours.)
Does anyone know where they are located in Canada? They might be
more willing to take a look at it if I just showed up at their door.
I live near the Canadian border in northern NY. (Watertown)
Do they have a repair facility in the US?

Are there any independent companies that check out and repair
video cards?

I paid $135 for this card, and I'd really like to exhaust all
possibilities before I throw it in the trash.

They have a repair depot address in the US, in fact it's somewhere in NY
near the Canadian border. It may take up to 48 hours to get a response
to an RMA. You need to be a bit more patient. I have had to RMA about
a dozen products to ATI, and I have never had a problem with their RMA
service.

Do you know how much technicians charge per hour? Nothing gets
repaired anymore! If it does not work and you have no warranty, toss
it out. ATI used to have an upgrade program, you buy a new card and
you get a small discount on the new card. It was good for a laugh
because you could probably get the card cheaper at a retailer.

Good luck in your quest. :-)

If you can spot obvious signs of damage on the card (like a capacitor that
had broken off), take it to a TV/VCR repair shop to get it repaired. Most
often it's gonna be something like busted RAM, which isn't repairable.

Last summer I bought a 9600 pro on eBay for $45. It had been plugged
into something that burned a trace off the board - as in you could see
the black spot on the board. I called ATI and told them the whole story
and since the serial number indicated it was

A: built by ATI and
B: it was within the warranty period.

They issued me an RMA and exchanged it for a new card. All it cost was
the shipping to the USA address which IIRC was Carrolton TX. Took about
2 weeks and it works fine.

BTW, the eBay seller had been making a big deal about how he insured it
for $150 so he _knew_ something was screwed and he thought the post
office would cover his mistake. I have since bought another 9600 pro on
eBay and this one is fine.

Good luck
