Howdy: I have an old Pentium II PC with a partitioned drive on which I
had installed Win2K to boot from one partition and Win98 from the
other. I recently had problems with Win2K that prevented me from
connecting to my ISP. Tried restoring system from a backup and totally
broke it -- can't boot it anymore. I can't reinstall OS with my insall
disc because the disc must be booted, and the BIOS was changed when I
stuck a SCSI card in. (Restoring the BIOS *might* be an option if I
could find the BIOS code)
Anyway - I plan to get a new computer, but in the meantime, I'm booting
the Win98 side of the disk (which at least gives me access to my files)
and I'd like to make it at least half-way functional -- as a minimum to
connect to the internet. I've learned the hard way that if you don't
have a firewall installed these days, your system can be infected with
malware the instant you go online (at least, that is, with Win2K and
higher, but maybe also with Win98). So ... before I do anything, I
wanted to get Sygate Personal Firewall up and running, as well as
Kaspersky Anti-virus, both of which I have on backup CDs. HOWEVER ...
both Sygate and Kaspersky complained that I MUST have IE 5 or higher in
order for the installation to proceed. Apparently my old Win98 system
does not have this.
Microsoft.com/downloads has IE 6 listed, but I can't seem to figure out
how to get it ... seems it wants you to be connected from the system on
which you are planning to install. All it gives you is a teensy little
file called IE6setup.exe, which obviously you must execute while
on-line to grab the real thing ... but which I'm afraid to run, since I
suspect that it sniffs out yourOS, and only gets the version that
supports that OS, and being on my friend's XP machine, what I'll get is
something for XP. (Also - I don't to take a chance on some prog putting
unknown stuff into someone else's system) I did find an 800 number to
call and get IE6 on CD (800-360-7561 .. I *hope* it's legit). Is
there any other place where I can find IE5 or IE6 , uninfected, legit
versions, that I can download to my friend's system, burn to CD and
then install my my own?
thanks
