Where does Outlook keep track of downloaded messages?

I'm using POP3's ""Leave a copy of messages on the server" option, and have
run up against the issue where when the PST is taken to another machine it
downloads all the messages again the first time it retrieves mail. So
obviously it's not the PST itself where this information is kept. Is it
another file or the Registry?

I ask because I do move PSTs around a lot, and it would be great to know if
there was a way to avoid this short of IMAP. I've done a lot of searching
and haven't found the answer.

Thanks

It is in the pst, but its tied to the account/computer/guid so it will not
be used if you use the pst with other accounts.

The only way to avoid it is to not leave mail on the server. Or use IMAP.

That's unfortunate. But if it's matching a unique identifying number in the
PST against (I'm guessing) a particular location in the Registry to
determine if that PST "belongs" to that machine, couldn't you adjust the
Registry value on the second machine to be the same as the first? Assuming
it's not constantly changing the value every time you download, of course.

It's not in the registry, AFAIK. There is a hidden 'mailbox manager' file in
the inbox - its tied to the account and machine guid.
