Where does file go on hard drive?

I'm brand-new to movie making, and am probably making stupid mistakes. The
one I'm working on now is that when I capture a video from my camcorder to my
computer, I have no idea where that video is going to be saved. I am
presented with a default location (which apparently cannot be changed, as it
is blued out, and will accept no changes). After capture, I have to search
my hard drive folder-by-folder to find the film; I have not even been able to
go so far as to begin to edit the film. I follow the path given, and the film
is not where it says it should be. Should I try saving the film in a
different format, e.g. TIFF, GIF, or others, or leave it as be?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I don't quite understand "it is blued out"?

The default location would normally be "My Documents\My Videos"

You don't have the option of saving to TIFF or GIF etc... only DV-AVI and
different quality settings of WMV files are available through Movie Maker.

I also do not understand why you haven't been able to edit or why you even
need to find the videos on your harddrive. Once captured they are
automatically saved into your collections. Click the collections button at
the top of the screen.

I recommend you do some reading about Movie Maker as it seems you need to
know the basics so I recommend these sites:
Papajohn's Website: www.papajohn.org
Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/getstarted/default.mspx
My Site: http://www.wojos-web.co.nr/
There are many others, I have links on my site, but this is a good start

When you save to computer you are given the option to browse for location and
name the movie.

Obviously but heathbug said it was blued out which is what I am waiting for
a response to.
The text in the filename box is blue but only because it is selected by
default so I am asking for more information from the op to understand the
issue.

This is an issue I have never seen or heard of before.
If what your saying is accurate then Movie Maker seems to be corrupt and in
need of reinstalling.
Unfortunately the only way to do that is to reinstall SP2.
Before doing that though see the [Movie Maker -> Troubleshooting -> Bad
Installation] section of my website and try reregistering the DLL's. I don't
expect that to work but it is easy to do and worth a shot.
Otherwise you can download and reinstall SP2 here:
