Hello People,

I have heard alot about the fluid which you guys call windex. Is
windex an american term for the item? I live in Northern Ireland and
was wondering what i would be asking for at a supermarket or hardware
store ( Hello could i have a bottle of windex) or?

I hope you understand what i'm trying to say.

I take this fluid is very good at clearnig print head problems,
especially for those little epson stylus inkjets and the canon's
bjc21e print head units.

Thanking you all in advance for your comments.

"Windex" is a commercial product available in most supermarkets in the
U.S. & Canada, but I don't know about how good it is for cleaning
print-heads, as it contains ammonia.

Windolene still works but for some reason (it smells stronger) Mr Muscle a
kitchen wipe down fluid and their shower cleaner works better. I have just
cleaned an Epson 895 in 10 minutes with that - and it is perfect again.
If you place a small swab of the ink in a saucer full you'll notice it
disperses instantly - sortuv explodes.

That is what I find with Ajax Spray n'Wipe

Several years ago, U S Consumer Reports
suggested a fornula that was supposed to be similar to U S WINDEX.
One-half cup of sudsy ammonia,
One pint Isopropyl alcohol (78%)
One teaspoon dishwashing detergent
(liquid).
Dilute to one gallon.
We have used this as a Windex replacement for years.
I have never had occasion to try it for printer head cleaning.

for e-mail, remove pany.htm

Yes, Windex is a North American product. The Windex used for head
cleaning is simply an ammoniated window cleaner. It is made up of
water, glycol, ammonia and maybe a bit of alcohol.

Any generic window cleaner with ammonia will work. There is a UK
product which is clear in color called Original Windolene which is
similar (NOT the thick pink liquid which you dilute).

If you cannot get an ammoniated window cleaner, maybe you can acquire
household NON-SUDSY ammonia. If so, you can mix this one part ammonia
to 9-10 parts water for a similar dilution to window cleaner.

Some places in the world do not seem to sell ammonia as a cleaning
liquid. I do not know if this is because it can be used in explosive
production, or due to health issues (it has a mild risk to the
respiratory tract if used full strength without ventilation).

Actually, Windex comes in several formulas, not all containing ammonia.

They have some versions which have no ammonia, and some which contain
vinegar (all purpose). It is indeed the ammonia and the glycol that
make sit a good inkjet head cleaner, as most inkjet inks are alkaline
and the ammonia helps to dissolve both the dyes and the resins in
pigmented inks.

Just get some ammonia, the type without soap in it is best.

Undiluted household ammonia may cause damage to a printer's head. It is
too alkaline and it is corrosive. Sine most inkjet printers use metal
components in the head, that is probably not good for them. I usually
suggest about a 10:1 water to household ammonia mix, this is similar in
concentration to that used by most liquid window cleaners which use ammonia.

That's a fine recipe for window cleaner. However, it is not safe to use
in an inkjet printer.

I was just looking on line for the MSDS for Windex and I found it.

I also found Ajax window cleaner, but I haven't yet found either Mr.
Muscle Shower Cleaner or Ajax Spray n' Wipe (in terms of the MSDS)

The window cleaners contain, a type of glycol (some use propylene, some
ethylene) alcohol (usually isopropyl) some form of ammonia, and lots of
water.

If anyone finds the MSDS of ingredients for Mr. Muscle Shower Cleaner,
or Ajax Spay N' Wipe, I'd be most interested, and would appreciate if
they would send me a copy in private email.

Thanks,

Marty,

Windex is a very popular window cleaner here in the USA, BUT do not use
anything to clean any printer parts that is not recommended by the printer
mfr.

My Epson printer, (after you have tried the printer's built-in
Self-Cleaner), is supposed to be cleaned with a soft cloth and a mild
detergent.

My idea of a "mild detergent" is something that a young lady would use to
wash her filmy lace panties.

I think Windex contains Ammonia, which may be too strong.

The Spray n'Wipe came recommended from a Friend that works for a Printer
repair firm as they use it..

It does contain Ammonia, but a detergent as well, its thicker than a window
cleaner.

I think the type of cleaning being discussed in the manual is cleaning
the exterior of the case. In fact, that can be cleaned with either a
mild detergent (like quite diluted dishwashing liquid) but ammoniated
window cleaner is also safe on the plastic and does a good job or
removing ink stains in many cases.

For cleaning the heads and under the heads you need to use an ammoniated
cleaner to fully dissolve the inks, and it works well and safely.
