where do I find the "cent" key, the shift 4 = $, is it around there?

Aha - I like that! I've always done it the other way too.


Practice safe eating - always use condiments
 
type "00a2" then hit alt-x. This will convert it to the cents sign.

You can also go to the insert menu then symbol and find it there
