my computer's in the middle of a dramatic death scene.
the best I can get out of it is the Repair Console, from
where I'm hoping to copy some files onto disk before I
reformat. the problem is, the DIR function isn't working
and neither is my memory.

Windows XP was set up with several users, each with their
own folder for documents. I remember seeing them all
together "Mohammod Ali's Documents", "Jeremy Bentham's
Documents", etc., but where was that? The root
directory? Under 'Windows'? Under 'Desktop'?

(I'm also not certain for the procedure for referring to
these folders & files which have spaces in them . . .
you're supposed to type something like Mohamma~1 right?)

thank you,
Jow

He is correct that it is under C:\Documents and
Settings\$Username$\My Documents

However, I'm not sure if you might not be able to still
repair the XP installation. The repair portion isn't
exactly intuitive. If you boot off of CD you should be
given 3 options I think. The first is to install XP. The
second option is the Repair. And the 3rd is to exit I
believe. You should be trying the first option of
installing XP and once you get inside that section there
is another option for Repair and then you should be able
to get things fixed. Providing that the PC is that close
to death or not :-/

As far as changing folders with long file names. Normally
you can just use the text the way it shows. I.E. cd
documents and settings would get you there but I've had
the occasional one that doesn't work that way so you would
instead use cd "documents and settings"
