I have a Dell that's about 7 years old running on Win2000. For various
reasons, I can't upgrade the whole thing. However, I'd like to put
some more ram in it. I know it doesn't have very much as is. How can I
tell what kind to get? And where can I get memory that would work on
an older motherboard at this time?

First, enter your service tag number here:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/DellPartsFamily.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Then look through the RAM offered for your computer. Note the fastest type
offered, and the largest module offered. With that information, go to
www.newegg.com and search for your RAM. -Dave

I'd try crucial.com. They make it relatively easy to find your computer and
are reliable even if they aren't quite the cheapest..

Memory that isn't in current production can be real expensive from a
big-name source. Use Crucial to identify your part type and then hit
ebay.

FInd a computer of the proper vintage lying on the sidewalk, and extract
RAM from there.

I filled out this Dell from about 2001 when I came across a computer last
summer that had the needed ram. I decided the computer I found wasn't
faster than what I had, or not by much, so it wasn't worth dragging the
whole computer home. So I extracted the ram, and the USB card, and the
hard drive if there was one (I can't remember) and the RAM fit my Dell
and I finally had the maximum of 512megs of RAM.
