Where could I go to get a 40 gig hard drive dirt cheap? I mean REALLY,
REALLY cheap? I'm looking for a 40 gig, IDE 3 1/2" hard drive. Newegg
won't even cut it. I'm on a real budget. I just need a 40 gig hard drive
that's working properly. I don't care if it's used, refurbished, or new.
The only thing is, I would rather not get a Maxtor unless I would have to.
This hard drive is going into an eMachines, so I'm not looking for something
fancy - just something that will last at least 2 or 3 years. (or more.) I
know this is a little off-topic, but if somebody has any ideas, please let
me know. Thanks.

Really cheap hard drives can also be equated to low quality control runs and higher drive
failure rates.

The last hard drive I purchased was a 120 GB Seagate that ended up
costing $40 after the rebate. Considering that my first hard drive was
$400 for 40 MB I would consider the new drive to be dirt cheap. You
might want to look for specials on drives that have rebates. This way
you will have a new drive that should last long enough.

Hey Travis, If you live in USA, go to bestbuy or circuit city, they
usually have a sale every week one one hd or another,
just a few weeks ago Best buy had WD 80gig, 8megcashe, 7200rpm
hd for $20 after rebates ! my friend bought two of them,
good luck

Don't you have a local usenet forsale, buysell etc newsgroup? Used
drives regularly come up in those .... or you can post your own want-ad
there.

EVER HEAR OF EBAY??
Uh, let me see... No... I've never heard of ebay! (Sarcastic) I checked
ebay before I even came on here.

I live in Des Moines, Iowa. We have a bestbuy, CompUSA, Office Depot,
Office Max, and so on and so forth. I don't know about a Circuit City
though, but I would assume so since I see Circuit City commercials on all
the time.

I have used Pricewatch, but it never came to my mind... I'll take a look.

If it is REALLY "dirt cheap", it is obviously NOT going to last 2 - 3 years.
You get what you pay for in life.

I found a few cheap hard drives on ebay, one of them I was already outbid,
the other, I'm in the lead right now... we'll see how long that lasts. It
has a day to go.

That's why I usually can find Maxtors cheaper than Western Digital. (Not
trying to start a war, but from my experience, I've had a much better
experience with WD than Maxtor.) Of three Maxtor hard drives, one lasted
not quite 3 years (it was expensive when we bought it new too) another
didn't even last 4 months, and the other is still working and has been for a
little over a year. I've used around 10 WD hard drives and only one has
given me troubles. (It was DOA too.) I do think, however, WD hard drives
are louder, but I think they run better. The one Seagate hard drive I've
used is the one that I am replacing that quit - in the eMachines. It was 3
years old and probably what did it was I'd leave the computer off for a
month or two, which I guess might have been hard on it just like a car.
(The eMachines is my secondary computer.)

WD hard drive ages... (It's kind of difficult to follow this, but here we
go.)
Computer built in Jan. of '02 - C:) 3 years, D:) 1 1/2 years
Computer built in Oct. of '02 (My main computer) - C:) 2 years (approaching
2 1/2), D:) 1 1/2 years
Computer built in Jan of '03 - C:) DOA HD; replaced same day and the
replacement's still going C:) 2 years
Computer FIXED - C:) 1 year (Replacement HD for the Maxtor)
Computer built in Feb of '04 - C:) 2 years (It was in a different computer
for a year.) D:) 2 1/2 years (Also in that different computer)
Computer built in Mar. of '04 - C:) 1 year D:) 2 1/2 years (In a
different computer before this was built.)
Computer built in Dec. of '04 - C:) 2 months

In case you're curious, one of the Maxtors (the 3-year old) started giving
hard drive failure immenent warnings. The other was having data loss
problems. You'd no more than put something on it, then it would go corrupt.
Reformatted, tried installing Windows, and it would get stuck. Tried again,
then said that files were corrupt or missing after the installation was
complete. Another time, it said that it couldn't load certain files when I
tried re-installing again.

And the Seagate just would no longer power up at all.

Also trying looking for a "forsale" newsgroup specific to your
city, state, etc. If there is one, you'll have a good chance of
finding someone willing to make a trade instead of taking cash,
someone who will deliver and install his used drive and
demonstrate that it works properly, etc.

I found a hard drive and bought it. It's a WD 40GB 7200RPM Prestege HD.
Yes, used, but tested and working fine. Formatted and bootable. Ready to
go. Now the wait...

Sorry - 5400RPM. However, most of the used hard drives on ebay that I found
were older than this one.
