Sounds sweet. After I retired my trusty P3B-F about a year-and-a-half ago, I
bought an Asus (of course!) P4B266 with Intel's i845D chipset (the first
Intel chipset to support DDR.
Asus P4C800-E (as well as other P4C800 series) has the new Intel 875P chipset
with PAT (Performance Acceleration Technology). This motherboard is the best
one out there. When it comes to gaming experience, this is a must-have
motherboard. I am not much of an overclocker 'cause I like to go easy on the
motherboard but this motherboard like any other Asus boards doesn't compromise
any stability even when overclocked.
The motherboard has "only" a 400 MHz FSB (not >533 or 800),
but I've got 512MB of Mushkin "black" memory with all memory
settings cranked to the max, and a 2.4-GHz P4. Like you, I prefer ATI over
Nvidia, and I have a 9600 Pro.
For now, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro is the best. That's the kind of card that will not
let serious gamers down.
I'm going to keep my present system until it croaks... and I'm going to take
very good care of it so that it doesn't croak for a long time. I'm not a
heavy duty 3D gamer but, when I do play (usually with my son), I run at
1280x1024x32 with all/most of the eye candy turned on. I can't imagine
needing more power than I've got now! I can only imagine what a 3.0+ GHz P4
w/ an 800-MHz FSB and a gig or two of 400-MHz dial channel DDR must be
like... but it's way more than I need now! ;-)
I like to build a game demon. ;-) I mean, sooner or later, I have to get ready
for "DOOM 3" and "Half Life 2". Those games are gonna rock when they get
released.
I use Windows XP Pro as my operating system. As you might know, XBOX has basic
Windows operating system kernels that are only needed for games. Not exactly
but in a way, you can turn Windows XP into a dedicated game console by turning
off all the services running in the background that you don't really need.
As you turn on XP, it automatically boots up about 65 to 80 services. I have
only 16 services running.
