I can find a billion cases that look pretty and come with a handy ol'
power supply. I want to build my own custom pc's and want to start
with just a shell. I really dont need or want a power supply, nor the
side panels or even the front panel, just the metal shell. Does
anyone know where I can find a place to buy such a thing?

Try your local used PC shop. Or Ebay.

Don't know, but the obvious answer would be to buy a regular one (used) and
then strip it down for your purposes.

I've done this sort of thing in the past for custom PC cases. One
simple modification was to take about 5" off the height of an old
mid-tower case by removing the three 5.25" drive bays (didn't need
them for what I did).

Unfortunately, many of the places I used to get parts (local PC
builders and "upgrade" shops) have gone out of business. PC's are so
cheap today that fewer and fewer people want to upgrade what they've
got.

Usually when PC Cases are returned for defects it is due to external
case fit and quality. If there are custom computer shops that build
or upgrade computers in your area they may take tradeins. Often local
computer shops have OLD PC's that people have traded in or no longer
want.

I have also seen older PC's for sale at places like community colleges
when they sale the older PC's that they have replaced/upgraded.

You might also try some stores like www.directron.com
they sometimes have damaged cases for sale. I think they sell some
customized cases they customize and these are the leftovers from the
rejects.

At www.newegg.com they sell refurbished cases also.

From my response in another NG:

I've seen links to places where you can order just parts of cases. Not
bad stuff, either: motherboard trays, shells, the sorta stuff you're
looking for. Do a google groups search. I just checked through my
bookmarks for you and I could not find this site. It *may* have been in
the UK, not sure...but I do remember it.

You can get a antec case with nothing in it, I believe from NewEgg. THey
seem to sell antecs with and without the power supply.
