I would like to install an Infrared Port (e.g., for interfacing with
handheld devices) on my computer. I can find external adapters that
connect to my computer's USB port, but I cannot find a device that
installs in my case and connects to the motherboard. Any suggestions?

If your motherboard supports it, you should be able to buy one from
the motherboard manufacturer.

Check Ebay. When I was looking someone was selling them, an plates to
go in a 3.5" bay.

I've been looking for the same thing, without much luck. My MicroStar
(MS-6534) manual says to get one from a third party. The IR kits I found
around the internet were all over $40. Found a seller on eBay, named
"thirtyday" that has several kits for $14.99 plus $8 shipping. He charges
extra for the 3.5 drive bay parts to mount it with, so I'll make my own.
Mine should arrive in a few days if you're interested to know how well it
works. I also found plans to make your own at several web sites, if you're
interested. Hope this helps.
