I have never liked the way Windows arranges the shortcuts in the Start
Menu. For many years I have been setting up my own, which mirrors my
work habits. I know there are multiple lists (at least two) and that I
must coordinate them in order to have a clear presentation in Start |
All Programs. I have found one of the lists, but there are still unruly
entries which I cannot access. The list I have found is at:
\Users\user\AppData\Roam\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. Where is
the other Programs list? I had no problem finding it in 95, 2000, XP,
but I have searched every term in the string, even unhiding files, and
Win7 stubbornly refuses to yield up the information. Please help!

I don't know what you mean by "other" program list.
Windows 7 is just like Vista - Start Button-All Programs for ALL installed
Programs or just the Start Button for recently-used Programs.
How simple do you want it?

And BTW this group is for VISTA, as in the title.

That's funny. No one uses Visa anymore (not even Frank). Windows Me was
used longer than Vista, the worst OS MS has ever made.

I have to say that the traffic appears to have dropped dramatically in this
group - even allowing for the killfiling of several idiots...

Same problem in Vista and Win7. I'm not talking about the list "in Start |location of one of which I provided. "How simple do you want it?"

Since MS, in its usual infinite wisdom, has chosen to create
inaccessible and uninformative forums, rather than use the newsgroup
channel, I was forced to access a Vista group. The problems are
sufficiently similar to justify this approach. Is that simple enough?

Thanks for your input.

Hi,
Is the other folder/list the one at Local
Disk\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu?

As I said "how simple do you want it?" I don't understand what you are
attempting to do. Why not just leave things as they are? It's quite
straightforward...

I do not have an Vista in front of me at present only a W2K8 and you have the Start
Menu in Administrator,Users,Default User, Guest.
As you say the list for the Start Menu is spread between all four. Just to let you
know I also do the same as you

No it isn't. I use Vista and have very few issues with it that are not
directly related to third party software. Most of the bad press ME and
Vista received was repeated by people that never tried them.

I also use Visa all the time, because I don't like Master Card. :-D

Hello Avraham,

The other location is:

"C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"

You can find the location of any Start menu item by right-clicking on the
item, choosing Properties, and then clicking on the Details tab.

There's one of the problems.

I ran Me for a few years. The main problem was having to reboot so much.

Me too :-)

My All Users Start Items are here:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

My Personal Account Start Items are here:
C:\Users\xxxxxxxx\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

You can clean them up by creating additional folders such as Applications
and Utilities under each account. Then move the appropriate Start Menu Items
into these folders. Yes, you can create the same folders in each account and
the Start Menu Items will then be in one folder of your creation when viewed
under Start/All Programs.
