where are stored password kept

hi i would like to know where the stored password on the system are actually stored. and as being administrator, how do you find them. i mean which file has these data.
 
They're in a file called SAMS (for local account, anyway). As an
administrator, one thing you should know is that you CANNOT RETREIVE A
PASSWORD. If a user forgets his password, reset it to something. You
cannot lookup the person's password and give it to him.

This is not strictly true. You can hit the SAM with a password cracker,
and given enough time (which may be days or weeks), you can crack
it.
