Where are my Templates

I've just been trying to put some new Word templates on my wife's
laptop (Windows XP/Word XP). I saved them as .dot files in the
templates directory (C:\Documents & Settings\<User Name>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates) but when I start Word they do not appear in
the New from Template section of the New Document info on right of
screen. Having double checked I had put the new files in the correct
folder I then deleted 1 of the original template files which was
displayed. I started Word again & it was still displayed although when
I try & use it it fails. I've also tried using Word to put them there
(File Save As Template file ) - it puts them in the template folder
but the files are not added to the list displayed.
No matter what I do in the Template folder the display of files in the
New from Template folder does not change. I've shut Word down &
restarted and also rebooted but no change.

Can someone please tell me what is going on.

Thanks

Nigel

In the task pane, did you click on "General Templates"? That is where you
should see your new templates (in the New dialog). They won't be separately
listed until you've used them (and only a few of the most recently used are
listed, anyway).

Thanks for your help.

It was the "General" bit that threw me as I scanned through the tabs
in this dialog assuming they were all the standard Microsoft templates
rather than also including the User's personal ones. It may be more
obvious if Microsoft named the General tab as "Personal" or "User"
templates.

Once again thanks
