Where are downloaded updates hiding?

Dumb question of the day! "I've set up automatic updates" to download the
updates but to not install them. Most times when the download finishes it
shows an icon (yellow shield?) down in the task on the right side. However,
if for some reason I don't click on it in a short time it disappears. Can
someone tell me how to find where to install the downloaded updates without
having to go to the shut-down screen. (I don't shut this computer down very
often so it may be days before I see any prompt to install those updates.)
TIA!

Visit Gary & Lucy at:
www.under-1-roof.com

Folder:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

contains folders or files for installation. Under each folder, there may be
an update folder containing an update.exe file.

Not all downloads are placed in sub-folders. Some are left as files but
cannot be installed since the files are not executable. Sometimes, just
renaming a file to add an .exe, allows you to install that package.

You can try turning off Control Panel | Automatic Updates, click Apply, wait
a few seconds, the reset the option to how you want it. This will cause
Automatic Updates to check for updates, and if sitting in the Download
folder, prompt for installations.

Rebooting should also cause non-installed downloads to request to be
installed.
