Where are Attachments to email messages stored?

I am using Office 2002 on XP Pro. If you look in Outlook
help to find out the default storage place for Outlook
Data files, it gives that for messages, calendar info,
settings, addresses, etc.. But it does not tell you
where ATTACHMENTS to email messages are stored.
It *seems* that they are stored under Documents &
Settings/(my identity)/Local Settings/Temporary Internet
files/OLK4A. But I only see that location when I want to
save an attachment that I opened from a message, and that
is the default place for saving the attachment.
HOWEVER, if I do a search for one of those attachment
files, they are not found.
If I want to access an attachment file that I opened and
changed, and saved in this convuluted pathname of
Documents & Settings/(my identity)/Local
Settings/Temporary Internet files/OLK4A I CAN"T see the
OLK4A folder in my Temporary Internet files folder. (Why
the heck Microsoft developers put this in such a
convuluted non-intuitive location is one thing. But why
we get no info on where this important info is stored in
Outlook Help and we CANNOT ACCESS the info in this folder
thru normal search and file folder navigation really
makes no sense.
How do I get at this sub-sub-sub folder and how do I tell
Outlook to store my Outlook attachment documents in a
more accessible place?
Thank you in advance, and I hope there is better design,
or at least better help, in the next release.

When you open an attachment, a copy of the file is saved in a temp folder
(the one you mention). Why not just save the attachments when you get them,
to the folder of your choice, and then open them? Keeping temp copies isn't
the best method in my book - you can modify the default Save As folder with
this: http://www.swinc.com/resource/outlookdefpath.htm

Hi
Thanks for your reply. I went to the URL,
http://www.swinc.com/resource/outlookdefpath.htm
The utility does NOT list XP as one of the seven OS's it
supposedly works with. So does it work with XP?
In answer to your question: Why not just save the
attachments when you get them,

Often I want to look at attachments before I decide
whether to save them, and if so where. Often one does
need to open the attachment first, and then do not have
time to save it right at that moment.
My question:
Why the heck does Outlook Help have no info on where this
important info is stored by default (unlike the
Outlook "data") and WHY CAN'T WE ACCESS the info in this
folder thru normal search and file folder navigation?

I don't know - try it.

Open them, and then do file, save as.

It's a temp folder, not designed to be used for storage. Just like Windows
has a temp folder. If you want, make a shortcut to the folder on your
desktop.
