Realized it's been just about ten years since I first got broadband
service. Back then I paid paid $55 a month for 128kb/s up, 512kb/s
down.

These days I pay $35 for 1,500kb/s up, 12,000kb/s down.

It was the year 2000 and it was optonline that was the fastest at the
time and I got the special deal from the WIZ stores, so I believe it
was $29 a month... and I did not have any cablevision deal. I had Dish
TV!

Many years ago (about 1997 IIRC), GTE (now Verizon) called me to see if
I wanted to participate in a DSL betatest. They were offering "up to"
512 kbs down, and 128 up. Their price was $80/mo. I told them I'd love
to, but that their "local outside plant" couldn't do it. They said they
would check on that, three days later they called back to tell me I was
right.

So it was back to 38-52 kbs on dialup till about 2000. Comcast started
offering cable broadband in my immediate area. IIRC, it was $75 for "up
to" 1.5 mbs down, 384 up.

I looked at that. I tried it from a friend's house, but immediately said
"no fscking way" after finding that I could connect to damned near
everybody else's machine in the neighborhood without even trying hard.
Also, their connection speed would drop to less than dialup during peak
times. Pass.....

2003, Verizon (VZ) started offering DSL here, $40 for "up to" 1.5mbs
down, 512 up. I took it, and it wasn't bad. I'd occasionally see
1.3m/450 but usually got 1.1m/350. Service was generally good, but
failures were usually "local loop copper" as I was close to the 15k feet
limit. But, there was little "afternoon/evening traffic jam". I'd only
have "IP lease" problems about once a week, a simple hard reset or
"release/renew" would take care of that.

Comcast started pushing "improved broadband" as part of the "Triple Play
package" here in 2006. They were offering 5mb/1mb for $39 or $33 on "the
package". Again, I tried it from a neighbor's house. Still "droopy
speed" from peak loading and loose security, but a whole lot better than
before.

I almost did go to Comcast, but VZ started doing FiOS in my area (I knew
that when I saw my telco service drop had an extra cable on it, and the
end had a fiber fitting).

We went the FiOS "triple play" of phone/broadband/TV in 2007, the
broadband was 4mb/1mb at (guessing a third of the package) $34.

Supposedly, I can call VZ for a free upgrade to 15 Mbs..

I've had pretty similar experiences. Around here Cox is the cable
provider and AT&T the telephone company. Quite consistently for
a decade now Cox has had the fastest top level speed, been the most
expensive, and had the most technical problems and speeds drops during
peak demand. AT&T has always been cheaper, more reliable, less
latency, and no peak demand problems. But their max speed has always
been slower.

$15mnth 130kB/s -- had to keep unlimited local landline calling VOIP,
altogether $40mnth

It was about fifty bucks from Comcrap in 2003 or thereabouts. A year later
I added teevee from them, too.

Now, it's still about fifty bucks, but if I cancel the teevee it'll go up to
80.

Bastards.

Toronto Canada. Rogers was the cable company and their High speed service
was WAVE. I got 768 K down and 128 up for about $30 a month in mid 1997. I
received some free cable teevee services because I was one of the first to
sig up for digitial cable and highspeed internet at same time in Toronto. I
also had a cell phone with the company and my total bills was about $110 to
$120

Service went to 1.5 mb in 1999 when WAVE became part of @home. Remember
them??? Excite@home??? the bill went to $40 a month

service went to 3 mb in 2003. 256 up

Service went to 5 mb in 2007. 384 up

Nowadays I live an hour west of Toronto in a small town and they have a
different cableco here. Cogeco. I get 16 mb/sec for a whopping $68 a
month with a 125 gb cap. $1 a gb over cap to a max of $50. Service is very
reliable and very very fast. including HD cable, 2nd digital cable box,
internet and cable phone my bill is $170 a month. pricey but very reliable
and very very very fast.
