The Home Premium and Ultimate SKUs both contain Media Center.

3. My Windows XP Media Center Edition came bundled with my Gateway computer
that was purchased in July of this year. Do you know if operating systems
that came bundled like that in a computer will allow the upgrade to Windows
Vista be considered "upgrade" and the program will cost me an upgrade price?
Or will it be considered full price?

4. Josh, what is "SKU?

Upgrades are going to be available too

It's the version-can't remember exactly what it stands for though, but it's
the version

Jeff
the two versions that will have media center are Home Premium and Ultimate

SKU "Stock Keeping Unit" usually used to identify the product number for
stock keeping purposes.

Question to any one who knows and to Microsoft: Does the Windows operating
system that came with a computer bundled with the other programs qualify for
"upgrade" price when the bundled operating system is updgraded to Vista?

Yes,
If XP, Win2000, etc. (see MS Vista site)
But, apparently, you will have to keep your current Windows install, and install from there (either
upgrade your current install (bad idea) or clean install to separate partition, and only x86 to x86
and x64 to x64.

It also looks like the best value for the money for most folks will be
Vista Home Premium Upgrade, especially if one already has a full
version of XP.

Vista Home Premium pretty much equates with XP Professional, plus
Media Center, along with Vista's advanced GUI (for those whose
computers can use it).

Unless Microsoft is planning on releasing a Generic OEM version of
Vista, that is the version I plan on purchasing, since I really have
no need for the features of Vista Ultimate (not in a workgroup or
large network).

Both Vista Home Premium and Vista Ultimate include Media Center.
While Vista Home Premium Upgrade is priced at $159, Vista Ultimate
Upgrade is priced at $269.

Probably, pretty soon, one may be able to purchase Vista Home Premium
Upgrade from third parties for $139-$149 (about equal to the XP
Professional w/SP2 Generic OEM prices).

So I advise all home users not needing extremely advanced networking
features to purchase this version.

The best part of this is that we will be able to transfer the license
to a new machine if necessary, while an OEM license does not allow
this.

Well, just from the posts in this newsgroups, the people who have "upgraded" their XP installations
to Vista, have had the most problems, BSODs, freezes, etc. Several who subsequently did a clean
install solved their problems.
I did a clean install on a separate partition, and except for one unknown ACPI device, I have not
had a single, crash, BSOD, or freeze. Individual programs that I installed and had problems with, I
was able to immediately uninstall them.
And a clean install allows you to remove all the junk that has accumulated.
All my data is stored in one place and takes minutes to backup.
..

| There is no "upgrade penalty" when upgrading to Windows Vista. It does not
| upgrade as prior Windows versions did, so there is no reason to tell folks
| not to upgrade.

x86 (32-bit) to x86 (32-bit); x64 (64-bit) to x64 (64-bit)
Windows XP (32-bit) to Vista (32-bit)
Windows XP (64-bit) to Vista (64-bit)

| DCR, can you explain what is "x86 to x86
| and x64 to x64."?

Actually it equates with XP Media Center Edition. It is NOT equivalent to
XP Pro. That is Vista Business.
