MS site just says H1 2005. They mention that the Customer Preview
Programme will be ready soon. Don't know what implications that will
have for the release of the final version.

The customer preview program is over. They ended it when x64 when RTM.

I read it wrong. A new preview version of the full-release version will
be starting soon.

"The Customer Preview Program for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
Release Candidate 2 (RC2) is now closed.

While you can no longer register to receive the Customer Preview Program
Kit or the trial downloadable software for RC2, we expect the
full-release version of the preview kit and the downloadable trial
software to be available soon."

Never. It's going to be OEM only.

Because of the abyss-mal 64-bit driver situation, I bleieve that post.
The HP.COMs have the "clout" to get their chip providers to do the
drivers, Microsoft doesn't actually control that one.

The MS guy over in the MS newsgroup said that an individual will be
able to buy direct from MS as a trade-in for a 32 bit copy.
Also that the OEM's are being encouraged by MS to trade-in copies of
the 32 bit OS for 64 bit versions IF they sold systems with the 64 bit
chips and 32 bit OS's.

Apologies for asking a FAQ, but where is this MS Newsgroup,
exactly?

It would be my cynical guess that xp64 will be escorted to the ball by
INTEL 64bit cpu's or none at all.

I found it quite interesting to see the online survey on dabs.com, which
asks a few simple questions like:

Gender: Male (5939) Female (813)
Usage: Home (2801) Work (527) Trade (186) Other (49)
Internet Conn: 56k (6) 512k (43) 1Mbps (33) 2Mbps (30)
Your CPU: Intel (3855) AMD (6730)
Home Wireless Netwk: Yes (2080) No (1253)

So are AMD becoming more popular? Or is just the homegrown choice? Or is
it something to do with Dabs being the enthusiast's choice of store?

They have a few other survey results there too.

I recall news a few months ago that AMD outsold Intel for a month, or
a quarter. Ain't competition great. Faster! Cheaper!

IMHO, swapping licences makes little sense, as some existing apps will not
work on x64, and lots of drivers will be missing for a while. XP 64 makes
sense in a dual boot config, or using virtualisation to host XP32.

JUST read in Maximum PC, May 2005, page 13 top left, MS WILL be
exchanging XP Pro, NOT Home, license for license for XP Pro 64.
The exchange will be FREE!!!! For those that have purchased machines
then you MUST deal with the manufacturer of the PC. You CAN buy Pro as
an upgrade from a current version of Home and then exchange it for
FREE from MS.

This will be "via a technology exchange program". "If you own a
personal copy of Windows XP Professional-i.e., it wasn't preinstalled
on a PC you bought-you can go online, authenticate it, and download
x64 just like a service pack."

"If you acquired your copy of Windows XP Professional when you bought
your PC,say, from Dell or HP-your upgrade path is through that OEM,
and you'll need to check with the manufacturer to determine whether
it's participating in the upgrade program."

"Microsoft has no plans to offer XP Pro 64 as a stand-alone retail
product."

Well, there is absolutely no reason to be an Intel CPU over an AMD
one today. This is ESPECIALLY true for 64-bit CPUs, where AMD
is far and away the better choice, for price and performance.

Aren't a lot of those Dell type system retailers INTEL only ?

They're too good to us.

No reason? don't talk rubbish. There are situtations where an INTEL chip
is the better choice.

Ash.

I am a total newbie as far as the performance of these two are
concerned. Would you please tell me in what situations the INTEL chip is the
better choice over the AMD?

Encoding

New E core AMD 64 cpu's now have the wondrous xyz-who-cares extensions
that help with encoding.

Buy the AMD.

INTEL has sunk too deep into it's own bullshit marketing culture and
Ottellini will be selling his stock on the sly.
