Does anyone know--or would anyone like to speculate on or guestimate--when
Windows XP will be declared to have reached its end-of-life cycle (or
whatever that term is that means there will be no more security updates
published for it)?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,
Long story short, there's basically 10 years of support for business
products and 5 for consumer ones.
Windows XP was released 12/31/2001. I'll leave it for you to do the math.

For more information on Microsoft products lifecycle policy, refer to
following web pages:

Alexander,
you might be a tad off on that(just a bit-lol);assuming you are using
the release date as a starting reference.Seeing as XP is still the only MSFT
operating system that's for sale; ,support would be discontinued for
consumer XP before consumer Vista is slated to go to market.-lol
Five years after discontinuation; i'll give ya, not 5 years from initial
release date.

Support for XP and XP SP1 has already ended. Only XP SP2 is now supported.
SP2 came out in 2004. SP3 is not due out until 2008 now. If it takes 4 years
to release an SP, it makes you wonder how much MS cares about XP.

Your statement seems to be accurate than my, Jeff.

From Lifecucle page for XP Pro
(http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=3223) :

"Mainstream support will end two years after the next version of this
product is released.
Extended support will end five years after mainstream support ends."

Looks like we have 7 years of support for XP Pro after Vista release.

Well, with Windows update the need for frequent service packs is low.
Install, update, then turn on Automatic Updating and, give or take, it takes
care of itself indefinitely.

When a product from Microsoft is two years off in the future, well, it's
hard to say if it will even ever materialize. We will have to wait and see.
It does seem though there are defintie plans in the works to deliver a
service pack 3 for XP.

But first they have to get Vista out and then Server 2003 is owed a second
service pack then XP. Depending on Vista's performace in the real world,
they might have to rush out a Vista SP1 in the interim before XP SP3 too.

Server 2003 SP2 is in Beta now. Vista SP1 is not due until the end of 2007.
If you have to format and reinstall XP, there are now some 60 MB's of
updates to download. By 2008 the updates may be over 100 MB's to download.

That's not too bad. Though maybe I'm spoiled because I'm on cable because
Windows here takes only a few minutes or so for to do the download and
another few for to do the install. The updating is all over in half an hour
and a reboot. I did one last night. It might take longer if you want all the
goodies e.g. a different version of WMP, the DotNET framework, Power Toys
and so on.
