When will Windows Mail work properly ?

I am getting fed up with this awful software Windows mail. I get errors with
it every day. Somtimes I can't delete mail, other times I can't move mail to
other folders. Sometimes a folder cannot be displayed at all. Every time to
get rid of these I have to reboot. Surely Microsoft must be working on
sorting out these problems. One only has to look at this forum to see the
huge number of problems users are having. How much longer do we have to wait ?

I wish I had never gone to Vista and Windows Mail. It is so so slow. Loading
some files on my new Dell laptop with 1gb memory, 120 gb disk & dual core
processor took 4 minutes as against 20 seconds on my wife's less powerful and
much older laptop running XP.

I am seriously thinking of abandoning Vista and going back to XP.

I even downloaded the Windows Live mail program to see if it would work any
better with no luck. The best think I did was uninstall McAfee & the
performance increased dramatically but I still have no email on the
notebook. My only hope is that they have it fixed buy the time I take my
trip in the spring.

I agree, Vista sucks. Took my neighbor to Thunderbird mail, almost like
Outlook Express.

It has worked properly here since December.

Since my Vista mail is corrupted & I don't expect Microsoft to fix it
anytime soon do you think Thunderbird mail will work? I hate to install it
to find the same result as with Windows mail.

I know it works because I installed it on my neighbors new HP with Vista.
The only problem I encountered was trying to bring his address book over
from Vista Mail. I had to export the Contacts list as a text file and then
import it into Thunderbird. Unfortunately it put the persons first and last
name into the first name field and their email address into the persons last
name field. But it was a simple matter of editing then one at a time and
doing some cutting and pasting.

Thunderbird will work. The only problem is that you'll have difficulty
importing anything from Windows Mail, such as account info, settings,
folder structure, saved emails, etc.

You may want to try out Windows Live Mail first, since it will import
almost everything automatically. Importing contacts is not automatic
but requires only a few mouse clicks.

Gary, I installed Windows Live Mail and had the same results as Windows
mail- I can receive but not send. Since I don't really care about my saved
mail on my desktop I'll give it a shot but I'll try & install Widows Live
one more time to see what happens. I just want to be able to receive & send
mail when I'm traveling. That's not asking to much.

If it has worked properly for you since December, how come so many people
have been complaining about it and getting constant errors ? I get errors
EVERY day. Are you using an updated version not available to the public ?

Is it set to use port 25 in your email account? That one is often blocked
by internet providers when the message comes from another internet
provider. You might ask your internet provider if you can use another
port for sending email.

I did not have a detailed problem statement or copy of an error
message from you, but now that you mention "traveling",
this brings up an entirely different issue. Was that your problem
all along, you could not send while away from home?
That issue has very little to do with your email program.
Nearly all Internet connection providers will block attempts to
access port 25 SMTP if that server belongs to a different network.
It is an anti-spamming measure. There are four workarounds:

1. Use webmail for sending when away from home.
2. Use a port other than '25' for SMTP, if your mail provider has a
provision for that. Typical alternate ports are 587 and 465.
3. Get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and
use it for your sending chores.
4. Use the SMTP server belonging to your temporary connection.

Windows Mail has worked fine for me, with no errors since I installed Vista
on 02/02/07.
Windows Live Mail has worked fine for me, with no errors since I installed
it.
Thunderbird has been working fine for me, for the past couple of years.

Because of several reasons. A common one is that they have installed Norton
or McAfee. Or that they have email scanning turned on in any anti-virus.

In way too many cases they have not set their accounts up properly. Almost
all email providers have instructions on their website for doing this, but
people don't want to be bothered following the instructions.

My version is the publically available version with the publically available
updates. Just look at the headers of this message.

You haven't given us any error messages to work with, but have you applied
this fix?
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It also works on other folders.

I first use the Windows mail when away from my homw server thinking that it
was sending because I got a copy in my sent folder.

2. Use a port other than '25' for SMTP, if your mail provider has a

I used 25 as instructed by the Comcast tech which didn't work & have since
tried 587 (but not 465) with the same results.
3. Get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and
use it for your sending chores.

I guess it a posibitliy if all else fails.

My Dell laptop came with Vista and Windows Mail pre-installed so I can only
assume they set it up correctly. However, the other software that was
pre-installed was McAfee. Would it be worth uninstalling that ? I used to use
Norton on a previous PC but you mention that causes problems also. Which
anti-virus would you suggest that doesn't mess up Windows Mail ?

Comcast is the only ISP I know who offers port 587 for SMTP
yet does not permit it to be used outside of its network.
Try changing the SMTP port to 465, and on that same screen also
select the SSL option for the outgoing mail server.

I just tried it & it doesn't make any difference. It still won't send. At
this point I'm not in a real hurry to get it working but I would like it
someday when I take my next vacation. I can only imagine how some people who
rely on email for their businesses must feel.

Can you post the exact error message?
