When will Microsoft learn how to copy files between 2 machines?

Ehhh Microsoft
Try this in Vista Ultimate
1- Get an XP Pro machine with a network card.
2- Get a Vista Ultimate machine with a network card.
3- Connect both of them with a reversed network cable add-hock
4- Establish a TCP network, and login to the internet if you want (one
machine shares the internet).
At this stage, everything works fine, the network is fine, internet is fine,
and life is good.
Copy a large file (1 GB) from machine 1 to machine 2 using a network share
on machine 1.
Results: does not work.
To whoever is writing code at Microsoft and did try the steps above, aren't
you embarrassed?

ad hoc

hhmmm... im sorry to say that youre the only one who should be embarassed.
using a cross over cable between 2 machines has no choice but to work... as
long as there is no user error somewhere. and in this case ill bet there is.

are both machines on the same subnet? can you ping one from the other? ive
done this a million times since vista was released with no problems. its
simple tcp/ip, and im sure you messed something up

At my home, getting Vista to work with XP machines wasn't automatic. M$
OneCare helped block things too. My user accounts not maching doesnt' help.

Even with Vista on both boxes, isn't too easy - For Example - I have an
ADMIN account called Bob (name changed to protect someone innocent) - with a
password on Box1 and and ADMIN account called Bob on Box2 - but with
different password. I have a mapped drive from Box1 to Box2 and the first
time accessing it from Box1, I have to enter the password of Box2.

Interesting . . .

I have an 'add-hock' network, as you call it, running with another machine
to share the Internet connection. I didn't see buying a router when
'machine 1' is on all the time anyway . . . but I digress . . .

I have a folder shared on an old XP Home machine and one folder shared on my
'brandy-new' Vista Home Premium machine and just tried to copy an 11.5 gig
file (recorded King Kong on HBO the other night so I could watch it when I
got home from work) and though it took a few minutes to finish, I had no
problem copying it from the Vista machine to the XP machine right over my
cheap, home-made crossover cable . . . and back again, just for the halibut.
:)

No suggestions, other than what others have already said . . . just wanted
to let you know that it's not a general problem with the OS(s), but perhaps
a problem with your network settings.
