In Outlook 2003 when using cached exchange mode, on a slow connection (we are
using an outsourced email provider) all our users are to speed up initial
load starting up in offline mode then switching to online mode. If outlook
started then went off to check the exchange server the users would not have
to use the offline mode at all. Outlook just gives you a blank screen and it
looks like it has crashed this can sit like this for up to a min then come
back ok. Some kind of hotfix for this would be great.

This is an odd problem description because if Outlook 2003 is configured in
cached exchange mode, users shouldn't see a "blank" window at first since
Outlook 2003 is going to show the contents of the *.OST file while doing all
the network nitty gritty stuff in the background. Any chance that antivirus
software is installed and is not releasing the OST file to Outlook fast
enough? (I generally recommend excluding the OST file from realtime
antivirus scanners.)

Hi

Antivirus is installed, but my ost file is basically empty, <100k, and if it
was the antivirus why would moving to offline start outlook instantly? I am
pretty sure its not the antivirus.

What happens is i start outlook it asks me for my profile, i choose my
cached exchange one, i get a password request allmost instantly so the
initial request is being processed by the supplier then the outlook screen
goes blank for the 30 ~ 60 seconds then my mail appears?

Here is my prf file (with some personal data removed)

Also for info the global address book only has 100 entries, and i have tried
it from both sides of a firewall?

I am sure its the order Outlook processes things? Any help greatly recieved
as its driving us mad.

Best Regards and seasons greetings

The OST should be under \documents and settings\<userid>\local
settings\application data\microsoft\outlook according to the prf file
posted.

outside of that, the prf file tells me that your site is using rpc over
https to connect to exchange and that it pulls the message header followed
by the full item. so is it safe to assume that you have applied service
pack 2 to Windows XP and Office/Outlook 2003?

This is an odd problem description because if Outlook 2003 is
configured in
cached exchange mode, users shouldn't see a "blank" window at first
since
Outlook 2003 is going to show the contents of the *.OST file while
doing all
the network nitty gritty stuff in the background. Any chance that
antivirus
software is installed and is not releasing the OST file to Outlook fast
enough? (I generally recommend excluding the OST file from realtime
antivirus scanners.)

message
In Outlook 2003 when using cached exchange mode, on a slow connection
(we
are
using an outsourced email provider) all our users are to speed up
initial
load starting up in offline mode then switching to online mode. If
outlook
started then went off to check the exchange server the users would
not
have
to use the offline mode at all. Outlook just gives you a blank screen
and
it
looks like it has crashed this can sit like this for up to a min then
come
back ok. Some kind of hotfix for this would be great.

Hi

I have XP SP2 and Outlook SP2 installed, and you are correct i have now
found the ost file and it is 271k so nice and small. When loading on online
mode it just takes 30~45 seconds and simply holds the splash screen with a
blank screen. I am stuck, many thanks for any help.

That is a pretty small OST file. At this point I'm going to take some
educated guesses by what I see in the file list posted.

1) Outlook 2003 is using some sharepoint workspaces. If this is tied to
your Exchange mailbox profile, I would try setting up a mail profile that
only connects to Exchange via RPC/HTTPs and nothing else. (Limiting it down
to where you think the problem is isolating the problem. If it doesn't
happen at this stage, then we look at the other stuff.)

2) There are 2 OST files. Either something happened to "outlook.ost" (e.g.
corrupted) or something force a new profile to be built to come up with
outlook0.ost. This could account for white screens as Outlook doesn't have
a local file to read from until its built.

Outside of that, I can't duplicate getting a white screen in Outlook 2003
when working in cached mode and connecting via rpc/https. (I only get the
white screen when cached mode is disabled and the OST file is deleted.)

Many thanks for all your assistance. The old ost file is probably from a
earlier test account so it may be a red herring, i will look into the
SharePoint thing.

Thanks again
