Ed,

They both use the same underlying encoding engine... if you want a single
fairly simple file then Movie Maker is fine, with a tweaked custom profile
if needed.

If you want a compound file, like one for streaming purposes with a number
of different bitrate files built into it, or you need more than 2 channel
stereo sound, then the encoder is the thing to use.

Hello there,

The one main reason I have for wanting to use Windows Media Encoder is quality.
With Media Encoder you can use the more rigorous option of a two pass encoding
routine. This routine gives a noticeably better result. I use other software
now that rivals Media Encoder (Nero 6 reloaded) and nowadays only use Media
Encode to do screen captures.

Hello,

ok so if I want files to play in media player and come from my website...
and want them to stream rather than download all at once.... how do we
accomplish this??

Well I guess my answer would be a question, Why would you want that? Or do you
mean you want a video to play ON your website in a web page???. If so try this
link...

http://cit.ucsf.edu/embedmedia/step2.php?mediatype=WindowsMedia

That link will enable a web page with a view it in a stand alone player.

Assuming the above IS what you want...you can go to my website and click on
GREAT LINKS > WEB SITE DESIGN > Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) there
you will find the four most popular web display systems. I use that link
because it provides a solid piece of usable code.
If I have made the wrong assumptions do please say so and I will try and point
you in the right direction again...and again....and again...:)

ok this is like the thing I can embed in the web page with front page...
this is also an older version like I am using as I can not get the media
9/10 version to work.... ( I think it is a front page 2000 issue)

Hello,

OK, so where do you want to go now? Have I answered your question fully? and
did you check out the resulting code and saw the code for running a video in a
separate window?

If 2000 will not create this code its not a problem really...the onus is on
the person viewing to make sure that his computer is up to the task....version
9/10 All that needs to occur is the option of downloading codecs as required
be enabled. If the problem is with your own machine then you may need to
re-install DirectX 9.0c, Windows Media Player (9 or 10) and possibly the
Version 9 codec pack from Microsoft

What is a tweaked custon profile? I'm trying to save my video in WMM but want
to play with different settings such as video size. I want to try say 540 by
360, for example. Is there a way to play with all the settings that appear
when I use the Windows Media Video 9 in Adobe Premiere?

Thanks Malcolm.
