Hi Dianah,
Keep in mind that the messenger.msn.com is owned by the MSN group (where MSN Messenger comes
from), not the Windows group (where Windows Messenger comes from).
The reason why you don't see Windows Messenger 5.0 popularized is some features in Windows
Messenger 4.7 (namely the Add-In functionality -- so MSN Hotmail, MSN Profiles, etc.) have
been removed in 5.0. To avoid confusion, there is no automatic update for Windows Messenger
5.0.

Well, I went to the following site:
http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx#Q3t and found
the following:
Windows Messenger
If you are using Windows XP, you need to run Windows Messenger version 4.7.2000 or later.
To check your version of Windows Messenger click Help, and then click About in the main
window.
If you are running a version older than 4.7.2000, click here to upgrade.

I clicked the "click here" to upgrade and it only upgrades to 4.7. What's with that?
Now ... after a little more snooping, I did find that there was an update to version 5.0.
When did MS stop advising of updates? I used to be advised when there was an update and
prompted to update or not. I'm surprised!
Greetings Dianah,
It's not being ignored -- there's actually a Windows Messenger 5.0:
http://tinyurl.com/ohq3
and Windows Messenger continues development.
