cannot tell you exactly what the message is but when he trys to start XP in
normal mode it says you must activate windows and when he does he gets an
error:

An error is preventing you from activating error code 0x80004005

any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm getting the same problem.

Summary:

Problems started after installing XP HE SP3. Was unable to boot (even into
safe mode). Managed to obtain an XP disk from a colleague and manually
removed SP3 using recovery console. After removal would boot to windows
'log-in welcome page' but advised that MFC42.DL_ and SYS_SRV.CH_ were missing
so I performed a windows repair from the XP disc. It asked me to input the
validation key. I used the key on the base of the laptop (came pre-installed
with XP HE) and installation seemed to go fine. Now on booting asks me to
validate windows and when I click 'yes' gives me the error 0x080004500.

I have tried the
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306081 but cannot
locate %SystemRoot%\sSystem32 on the PC.

Any ideas? In the meantime is there any way of accessing the files and
folders on the PC to back them up? I thought about perhaps installing XP on
the other partition, backing up the files then performing a factory restore.

Your help would be greatly appreciated as I have now been without a home PC
for 5 weeks thanks to SP3!

Best regards

Joe
