Will it be better to install it to a base XP install
or will it cope ok with an XP install that has SP1a loaded ?

if you've also loaded updates since will this matter ?

i'm thinking , go back to base install and apply SP2 when it comes out ?

any feedback welcome

thanks

If you have an always on internet connection, you're better off installing
SP2 with all previous security updates already installed, because if you
went back to the base OS, you'd be infected by Blaster or one of it's
variants before SP2 finished creating a restore point. And by the time SP2
finally rears its ugly head, there probably be something floating around the
Web looking to exploit the ASN .1 vulnerability.

I'm sure you meant SP1 Kurt.

ASN .1 vulnerability? What dat?

OP: I agree, install the most updated version of Winderz you got in
hand. Be aware that SP1/1a does NOT include the patches for the
vunerability Blaster & Welchia hit on. Get at least KB824146 hotfix
installed before you go online.

There's no need to remove SP1 or any subsequent Hotfixes prior to
installing SP2.

No, I meant what I wrote, as I believe the OP was asking what he should do
"when SP2 comes out," whether to revert back to XP Gold and then install
SP2, or just install SP2 over SP1a & all the patches he already has
installed. But I could have misunderstood.

OP asked in the thread, "When SP2 comes out"

OK, I probably didn't this time, but I'm not perfect, and I have mis-read
posts before. It's a bit embarrassing, but making mistakes is what makes us
human.

Thanks for the replies

I usually run with XP SP1a and then keep it uptodate

so i'll keep it at that and SP2 when its available

In the past, there was no difference. Win NT, for instance, got to SP6. If
you installed that on top of SP5 or on a clean install of NT w/o any SPs,
you wound up with the same files. I expect SP2 to behave the same.
