Hello

I wanted to delete a file from another PC. So I added the hard drive from
the other PC to this (by connecting to the IDE cable) PC and when the PC
booted up it said it found new hardware and would need to be rebooted before
you could use the new hardware. After rebooting, I attempted to login in
the usual manner and heard the Windows Startup sound and then just got the
Windows Ctrl Alt Del login screen again.

The same happens if I boot up in safe mode. Also whether I try to log into
our domain or locally to the local machine.

What can I do?

if you unplug the hard drive does everything go back to normal ?

are you sure you have your jumpers in the correct order ?
Booting from the master
Extra hard drive as the slave (provided they're on the same cable?)

I should have mentioned, after this problem I removed the other hard drive
and yes it still does the same thing. Interestingly I think that the system
decided to put the paging file on the other disk because when I remove the
'other' disk on login it complains that the paging file is too small and
shows how to increase the size of the paging file. So I assume it decided
to put the paging file on the other disk - probably D: drive and so when I
remove it complains about having no paging file.

I can't understand why this would have happened simply by attaching a second
hard drive to this PC. It has caused LOADS of hassle!

But what can I do now to solve the problem. I don't want to have to
re-install because I know that will be load of work.

Are you loging in as a new user or a user you often log in as ?

Can you try loging on as a differnt user (local admin for example)

Yes tried a few users. domain admins, local admins, normal users on domain.
Makes mo difference - always same problem.

I posted same issue on xp newsgroup (pretending it was an xp problem) and
got a response so trying that.
