When I view show it begins with slide # 80 ???

Let's start with: How are you viewing the slide show? If you are on the
first slide and it is jumping straight to 80, then something is weird. If
you are on slide 80 and it starts there, that might be related to how you
are starting the show.

Another possibility is that someone has set the show to only show a custom
show or a specific range of slides. One good place to check for this problem
is to go to Slide Show--> Set up show. Check that the whole presentation
option is selected, not the custom show option or a specific range of
slides.

A third possibility is that the first 79 slides are hidden. Click one of
them and check the slide miniature. Is there a box next to the miniature
that has a slash through it?

I cannot begin a slide show...have I preferenced something?

In addition to Kathy's suggestions, have a look here:

Can't run slideshow / screen show won't start; Icon appears on task bar

If neither helps, come back and give us more info.

Give us the step by step on how you're starting PPT, opening the file and
trying to get the slide show to start, and what actually happens vs what you
expect to happen.
