When I update Windows XP through IE 6.0, it stalls, doesn't freeze, but stall.

Dear Sir/madam,

I had just restored my Laptop Acer Asipre 1300 (around
2002 Model) Therefore a LARGE amount of updates had to
be installed. When I install updates such as Service
pack 1a, the setup utility would install the necessary
files and say installation is complete. Click Finish and
it "should" restart, but doesn't and stalls on this
Windows update Webpage Dialog. I restart the computer
and it says Service pack 1a had been successfully
installed. On the rest of the critical updates, the same
thing happens, it would install updates, then suddenly
stall, the CPU would operate at around 1%, and the hard
disk does nothing and stalls. Restart computer, it says
some updates had been installed "successfully" and some
had failed. Again, I scan for updates, more updates left
to install, tried to install ALL of them together, and
again, after a couple updates, stalls. Restart computer
and the whole cycle continues. I'm wondering if the
updates that were "installed successfully" were actually
installed successfully. Like, are they in effect and
blocking off vulnerabilities, would any file be missing,
or perhaps only the registry key indicates
it's "successful" whie it actually isn't and is leaving a
vulnerability unpatched. May I know what I could do to
make sure they work, or receive any word of assurance
that the updates are installed and effectie. Oh yeah, I
am using Windows XP Home edition.
