I think Windows XP has some feature switched on per
default that does not show a double quote after I have
type one. Only if I type another character, both the
double quote and the character appear. I don't like this
feature and want to switch it off. I have no idea what is
the name of this feature and cannot find it in the
keyboard settings.

Greetings,

Sander

Uh, what _application(s)_ are you using when this happens--or does it
happen when you type something into, say, the XP Run box?

Have same problem and seems to be OS related. Happens for
single and double quotes everywhere (including notepad,
office, run dialog, search dialog, this message box ...)
P.S. I have XP Home Edition SP1

I seem to recall some Office programs and a few word processors having
settings for typing of quote marks in the program menus. I've been tangled
in those menus a few times getting things setup the way I wanted them to
work but don't remember it ever effecting the operating system or other
programs.

Would recommend trying another keyboard but the problem you're describing
sounds to widespread for that to be effective...

Seems this has to do with using the US-International
Keyboard layout which allows you to create international
characters using two keystrokes. For characters like
apostrophe and quote, it waits for a second keypress
before deciding what to do. If the second character can be
accented by the first, then the accented character
appears, otherwise they appear as two seperate characters.

The solution is to use a different keyboard layout.

(For a full explanation, see see KB article 306560).

Thanks Paul. Appreciate the information!
