When I try to view MY VIDEOS it stops responding within folder

I have seen this problem with a lot of people and even though I had four
computers, the problem is the same: SLOW OR LAGGING VIEWING AND USUALLY STOPS
RESPONDING ALL TOGETHER WHEN I VIEW MY DOCUMENTS AND FOLDERS WITHIN SUCH AS
VIDEO AND PICTURES. This generally happens when I try to view a subfolder
that has a LOT of big files in it. What can I do to correct this problem?

Increase your RAM to at least 512Mb, if not already. In your
case 1 Gig may be needed.

This should not matter but it has several numer of videos in them some one mb
and some 40 mb, so the size of the folder is 3.45 GB total. How can I make
the search and open faster? It should not just disappear and the hard drive
stop when I try top open the folder. My friends dont have this problem and
they have C:|MY VIDEOS with over 10 gb of videos in them. The computer is a
1.8 GHz AMD processor from about 4 years ago so it is not the newest computer
but I defrag once a week at least and even after I did and ran a registry and
window files cleaner it still gave me the same problem.

No, that isn't very large for a folder that holds video files, mine is currently at 12.8 GB. But it pops open as fast as any other folder.

What antivirus program are you running. You might want to check the options to see if the program is using a real time scanning option. If it is, try disabling this option and then check to see if the behavior on that folder is the same.

Here is a strategy you can use to troubleshoot this problem. The first thing you want to do is get the system in a "clean" environment. Use the "Manual steps to perform a clean boot in Windows XP" contained in the following article.

How to perform a clean boot in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353

Once you start the system in the clean environment, try to recreate the problem. If this solves the problem, then you likely have a program in the start up list that is causing a conflict. Use the steps in the following article to track down this program.

How to Troubleshoot By Using the Msconfig Utility in Windows XP:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310560

If this does not resolve the problem, perform the following.

Check the Event Viewer for possible information. Go to start/Run and type eventvwr and press OK. Click the Application menu item on the left and look for any "X" error messages that coincide with when you last saw this behavior. If any are found, double click the error entry to see the details, click the Copy Icon on the right side of the details dialog screen (looks like 2 pages of text) and paste the error details in a reply to this message. You only need to post the text starting with Event Type: and ending with the Description:. You can omit the Data section.

ie:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: <source>
Event Category: <category>
Event ID: <ID #>
Date: <date>
Time: <time>
User: <user name>
Computer: <computer name>

that is a LOT to do that most dont have time to do. ANy anti-virus to work
properly NEEDS real time scanning because if you get a virus that is a worm
or a trojan that can instantly damage the computer, th real time scanning
stops it before it can do that. So I will NOT turn that off. How can that be
the problem? All my family used the same programs I do but do not have this
problem. I have seen this on everyone's computer when MY DOCUMENTS or MY
VIDEO gets full like that, for some reason it slows down or stops responding.
A good program from www.cyberdefender,com has to use real time scanning and
connecting to their web site to save people from viruses and worms and such.
it is good. I Can see what you are saying but I dont see how that can be the
real problem. To try and recreate the problem is next to impossible and
lengthy becuase I would have to shut off one process at a time and reboot and
that will take over 40 or more reboots. I wont do that. What else can be the
problem? If I cant fix it I will just reinstate the computer and sell it.

There is nothing in those troubleshooting steps that causes you to connect to the internet? Disconnect the cable for the modem or high speed connection while you perform the troubleshooting steps if the real time scanning worries you that much.

We are trying to identify where the problem is coming from. If you are unwilling to do this, the only option you have is to live with it. You could also save all important data on the system, format the hard drive and reinstall everything clean, but this is not guaranteed to work.

I dont know which ones pertain to my situation but there are several red x's
plus I will paste a message i see on a "!" triangle icon that says warning to:

anyone who does not have real-time virus and spyware scanning is a FOOL and
even employees from all major software manufacturers have said this. I did
not say anything about being connected to the internet for the
troubleshooting. what you are asking should not be necessary nor should it
take a long time for any solution. I dont have the time. This is something
Windows needs to fix in Vista and I hope they do. NO matter what programs are
installed, it should not prevent large folders from opening up. And it ONLY
happens with MY DOCUMENTS anything, never with any other folder no matter how
large it is. What you are referring to is not completely possible because if
that were true then other folders with a lot of documents would do the same
thing and it is only with one.

I turned off the real time virus and background scanning. Everything seemed
ok the first time until later I tried opening up the my documents video
directory. IT hung again. I tried defragging and running 2 registry and
temp/cache file cleaners. Nothing worked! What could be causing the inability
for the directory to open up and thus forcing me to close the documents video
screen after it hangs and freezes also causing certain things like my
Creative icon in my toolbar to close i the process. What is wrong here?
