All of sudden hyperlinks I create in ppt no longer operate as intended;
they're all 'transformed' into faulty 'mailto:' links.
Double-checked step by step using the Insert menu command, Action Button,
and Ctrl K; no matter what all I get now are a bunch of "mailto:" links.
Next, I did a "Detect & Repair." No help. Then I did a Reinstall.
No good.

I'm running Windows XP/sp2 -- Office 2003

I can create functioning hyperlinks in Word and Excel -- only PowerPoint's
have gone whacko. Any suggestions?

Does this happen on all presentations or just some/this one presentation?

Good suggestion -- whipped up a few new presentations - inserted several
navigation action buttons (go to slide 6; go to slide5, etc).

When I run the show and click on the links, a security warning box pops up
displaying the "mailto:xx" info; when I click on yes [do it anyway] box
appears telling me "Cannot open specified file."

What did you DO to that poor computer to generate such animosity? Though what
with it not being a living thing and all, I suppose "inanimosity" would be more
accurate? Well. Nevermind that.

I'd like to take a look at the file if that's ok with you. Email to steve at-sign
pptools dot com is good.

Paste this whole newsgroup post into the body of the email if you would.

OK, got the example file to look at; thanks!

The problem turns out to be a mailto: address in the Hyperlink base field in File,
Properties, Summary data.

PowerPoint prepends anything it finds in this text box to link addresses (and
apparently parses out stuff it doesn't understand) so when you click the link you
get:

mailto:[email protected] #Slide 2,Blah blah blah

I can't think of any reason you'd really WANT an email link as your base adress,
and as you can see, there are plenty of good reasons not to do that. <g>

unbeLIEVable!!!!! That was amazing!!

Why did you even think to look there?? And, BTW, I stash that link in my
Word doc's also, with no problem to date. Nevertheless, you can rest assured
I'm yanking it!

You have saved me a TON of aggravation, Steve ~ many thank you's!!

Good instincts, I guess. <g>
