When Excel opens, it opens multiple spreadsheets.

When Excel 2000 SR 1 opens, it opens about 15 spread
sheets and other files from all over the PC and network
drives. It looks like it's trying to open all the files
in some sort of a history. After it opens all that it
can stand you can close the ones you don't need and Excel
functions normally. I searched through the registry for
the names of some of these files and came up blank.

Has anyone seen this before?

Hi Tim,

Once you get Excel open, choose Tools/Options/General from the menu and
delete any path from the Alternate Startup File Location entry.

Rob, thanks for the advice. But, there was nothing in
that setting. Also, the files that it opens at start are
not all Excel files nor are they from the same
directory.

Hi Tim,

The fact that they aren't Excel files doesn't matter. If they are
located in any directory that is identified by Excel as a startup directory,
Excel will try to open them. The fact that there's no entry in the Alternate
Startup Files Location is a bit perplexing. That's the only way I know of to
set a directory besides one of the XLStart directories as a startup
directory.

Are you sure these files aren't located in an XLStart directory? These
could be located in two different places. The default location is under:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart

Under Windows 2000 and XP there will be an additional XLStart directory for
each user profile:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application
Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

If this isn't the case, I'd make sure that no programs are being loaded when
Excel starts up. Remove any files from the above mentioned XLStart
directories and then uncheck any add-ins that are selected under the
Tools/Add-ins menu.

1) Both XLStart directories are empty. The only thing in
there was an Adobe export addin.
2) The addins dialog box is greyed out. Should this be
grey if there is an Adobe Addin?
3) There are no .xlb files on the harddrive.
4) The files that are opening are all over the network
and hard drives.
5) I cleared out the temp dir.
6) Excel starts fine when I run ../excel.exe /safe.

Q1) Are there any registry entries I can check?
Q2) Will a reinstall work? Do I have to remove office or
just Excel? Are there any other procedures during a
reinstall that I should do?

Under Tools, Options, General, there was nothing in the
Alternate start up file location. However M: was in the
registry setting. I took it out and it starts up just
fine now.

Hi Tim,

Glad to hear you got it working. Thanks for posting the resolution.

Thanks

Hi Rob,
Thanks for the solution. Whenever I opened an excel file, it would open two another files in excel (none of them were xls file though). You solution really worked for me and it now opens only one excel file.
