There are some 128Mb 9800Pro cards for around the 650 mark, and some 128Mb
9700Pro cards around for the $550 mark.
Generally when the next generation arrives, the old stuff drops
significantly in price.
Ive seen talk about a 9800XT card arriving soon which is probably just a
faster clocked version of the current card, so that should result in a small
price drop. Given that the 9700Pro is over 12 months old and still above
$500, I wouldn't be holding your breath.

Can you lay your hands on a 9800 non pro? Not the SE, stay away from the
SE. The np is very overclockable and is identical to the pro except for
default clock speed, and here in Canada about $150 Canadian bucks less.

Not all are identical... be careful of memory speed.

True. The ones with Samsung memory (mine) are rated at 3.2 ns and are
overclockable to pro speeds. I flashed my bios with the pro bios and now
have a pro with no additional cooling. The ones with Infeon memory are the
same speed, but for some reason they are not as overclockable, although
still damn fast.

That would surprise me. Samsung make 3.3ns and 2.86ns memory rated to
300MHz and 350MHz repsectively. The Pro has the memory clocked at ~340Mhz

I believe there is Infineon 3.0ns memory on some cards. (which would get you
to about 333MHz)

Well I know that the Samsung memory on my card is rated over 3 ns but for
some reason overclocks beautifully. I flashed the bios of my card to make
it a pro and the memory is running at 337 MHz which is the stock pro speed.
The guy at my computer store (Ottawa Canada) told me that all of the cards
(Sapphire brand) that they are selling have Samsung memory and the feedback
he's getting is that they all overclock very well. That seems to be the
consensus in this newsgroup as well. Re: the Infeon memory, I have no
personal experience with it, but the word in this newsgroup is that it
doesn't overclock as well for some reason.
