Every time upon exiting the Excel application program whether you had saved a
document or just opened a new Excel spreadsheet an error message comes up
saying "Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience." Then you get a choice to 'restart
Microsoft Office Excel' after deciding to send an error report to Microsoft.
I've tried almost all the troubleshooting techniques, detect and repair,
reinstall MS Office Excel. Its strange because this doesn't happen on the
Administrator account on the local machine. This computer user is in a
domain for Windows Server 2000 so it could be a local profile issue but I'm
wondering if any of you Office 2003 MVP's knows what to do about this error
message? Thank you for your time.

Hi Brian,

This isn't guaranteed to solve the problem, but it's worth a try. Use
Windows Explorer to search all of the local hard disks for files with a .XLB
extension. Delete any that you find. Note that these may be a hidden files,
so you'll need to set Explorer to show hidden files before searching.

Excel uses these files to store information about its toolbar
configuration, but they frequently become corrupt and cause strange errors
like this. Excel will create clean new default versions after you delete the
old corrupt ones.

Thanks for the advice Rob but this didn't remedy the situation. Anything
else that you can think of that could fix this otherwise I'm going to try
deleting the local user profile on the machine.

Final Update:

Well, performing a profile dump took care of the Excel problem. Just wanted
to let anyone know that at least in Windows Server 2000 or 2003 environment
running Win Xp, Office 2003 applications, I find that many problems relating
to MS Office apps can be solved by deleting the local profile. Its kind of a
pain because you have to backup all the user's personal settings and then
recreate the profile. So, the problem must have had something to do with a
file in the profile causing a conflict or corruption.

Case closed.

Hi Brian,
So, the problem must have had something to do with a
file in the profile causing a conflict or corruption.

Two possible causes in that case:

1. A corrupt toolbar customisation file

Solution:

Remove any files with the extension of .xlb in the user's local folders
(or rename the extension to .old)

2. A corrupt registry entry

Possible fix:

Choose Start, Run and type:

"c:\program files\Microsoft office\office\excel.exe" /unregserver

And when that is done, repeat with this:

Start, Run
"c:\program files\Microsoft office\office\excel.exe" /regserver

(use the quotes, check the full path for correctness)
