Well since I got the responce from the previous thread "The CD you got from
DEll is tied to the Dell motherboard. If you swap out motherboards you must
buy the retail version of XP.", what if I were to buy a dell dimension 4700
motherboard? Can windows help me access from there? OR do I still have to buy
a retail version even thought the motherboard is made by dell?

I dont think so, I was told by several people in dell forums a dell dimension
4600 motherboard can fit in a dell dimension 3000 tower which is the question
I asked. Now im wondering if a dell dimension 4700 motherboard can fit in
3000 tower.

Oops. Erase that last sentence. Now im wondering if I can buy a dell
dimension 4700 motherboard? Can windows help me access from there? OR do I
still have to buy a retail version even thought the motherboard is made by
dell? Respond to the exact question please

It is not a question of whether the board will physically fit in your case..
your version of XP may not work because the BIOS on the two boards are
different.. the only way that you will find out is to try it, or ask Dell
about it..

Crap again man.. you were right, 4700 cant fit in but 4600 can. Anyways if
anyone finds info about the windows XP thing please reply asap my eyes are
burning, ive been trying to figure out this crud for so long.

So are you saying I have to buy retail version? If so... just say so,
otherwise can the windows xp cd work if I change my current 3000 MB to 4600
MB? four SIX zero zero exactly. heh..heh.

I am saying that you may have to buy it.. ask Dell about BIOS locking.. they
should know..

OEM licensing is different than retail licensing. There were new terms put
in place earlier this year in regards to OEM systems. Part of those terms
dealt specifically with the situation where an OEM supplied a replacement
motherboard. Basically, what happens with the existing copy of XP is up to
the OEM. They may or may not "allow" re-use of your current XP license. In
any event, make sure you get the drivers for the new board from them.
