I am not having an issue, just a question. When I unsubscribe to a
newsgroup, when is the store for that ng deleted? Does it stick around
until I do a Disk Cleanup? Just wondering how this works technically.

oops, sorry, you asked when, not where!
lol
I just shred stuff with a shredder manually.

Jeff

I am not all hot to do it, I was just wondering at what point the system
gets rid of it. If it does.

You'll have to try it and see. <G> There are too many new things that
haven't been investigated.

steve

Colin, I just tried this, and haven't seen the folder removed no matter what
action I take. Even a Disk Cleanup doesn't remove it.

Note that I am still using a Beta version, so that may be the reason for the
results seen here.

Thanks for checking it out. I don't care if the folder hangs around since I
am by no means short on storage. I just find the question interesing.

Colin,
You can always shred it!!! LOL
Don't get carried away though; like I did when I was looking into your first
post.
The O&O shredder I use works great; impeccably good, to bad I didn't heed
the "Are you sure you want to shred this?" warnings!!!!
shredded stuff I sorta needed!!!
lol-
I'm WELL versed in reformatting/installing Vista though!!!
LOL

Jeff

yup;
if it was XP, I'de be bumming.
but it's Vista, and even though it's RTM; I'm still in the beta-DO NOT
install on production machine- mode.
so no biggy for me,nothing is critical on my pc anyhow-lol
as a side note,
I'm going to do a Complete PC Backup and restore image asap.
It's "jeffproof"
although it takes longer.

Now my question takes on new meaning. Connect deleted all of the longhorn
newsgroups today. I downloaded a lot of messages over the months. Will the
my system purge those? Just curious. On a 750GB hard drive I am not
worried about space.

Yup. Next time you connect to those newsgroups, all those "stored" messages
will no longer be readable. And that happened today at mid-day. Check for
yourself.

Exactly, but what about the store on the local machine?

Again, I am just curious. Like I said, with a big harddrive this is not a
problem.

I have never paid much attention to how OE worked since I only used it as a
newsgroup reader and never had an issue. Now, as I start using WM I am much
more curious about some of these things I am finding the reading here in
this ng pretty interesting. You guys are good!

The news groups stored on your computer are worthless since it's normally
only readable when you are connected to the news server. But the next time
you connect to the news server, by clicking on the newsgroup, if the
message no longer exists on the server, your local file will be altered so
that it reflects that information.

We complained about this behaviour for years, contending that a users stored
files should be inviolate until he/she decides to delete them and were told
in words that are simple to understand - "tough." The only option for those
who wish to save some newsgroup messages is to create local mail folders and
select the desired messages and then right click and choose Copy To and
select that local mail folder. The Move To option is not available while
reading newsgroups. And unfortunately, that copy action may cause problems
with threading.

There are no programs I'm familiar with that are intended to extract news
messages (nws files) such as those that exist for mail. If there were
enough interest, maybe someone could be persuaded to create such an
application.

WHAT???? DBXtract (limited) and DBXpress work just fine to get nws files
out of dbx files. DBXpress will also get them from the hard drive.

You know, it's something I've never really tried. I just regarded the nws
files as so much "ephemeral" junk that I've never wasted time trying a
recovery. <G> Thanks for the info.

And as I look again at the newsgroup "we" are responding in, I'll state
again, that maybe someone will write such a utility for "Windows Mail and
News." <VBG>

I don't understand.
