Hi,

I was just about to order my new Radeon 9600pro.. when I read a review for
the XT series.. I don't want to go and buy the pro if the XT will apear a
few days later at the same price.. so anyone know when I can buy one of
these puppies here inthe UK or should I just go ahead and get the pro??

Cheers,

Simon

That's a good question. I was also about to order the 9600 pro here in the
USA when the XT review came out.

ATI web site has it as a pre order at US$200 and no release date. I was also
waiting for the 3.8 drivers and user reviews, so a few more days wont hurt I
guess.

Bill

Yeah, ATI's website and Anandtech both say that it will be $199 USD. As far
as Availability, I would say in a month or so.

November ? Wow :-( Cant wait.

do you think the 9600XT is just an overclocked 9600pro? Everything else
seems the same

Add about another 2-3 weeks after release before you find a store with
them, 7-10 days for them to appear available at some online site.

My friend wants to know if he should get the new 9600 XT or get a 9700
128 MB? Are there any benchmarks yet?

There are lots of reviews online for the 9800 XT, but benchmarks for the
9600 XT are hard to come by.

If you friend is in a hurry, a 9700 overclocked to Pro specs is a relative
bargain that can run with the big dogs. But he needs to be careful to get
one with good memory.

For $275, www.newegg.com is offering a PowerColor 9700 PRO, a sure thing at
a fair price. I suspect it will be a little faster than the 9600 XT, and a
lot cheaper than the 9800 XT.

That's correct but the Oct and Nov availability is taking that into
consideration. I think it was HardOCP that said Oct and Nov for the 9800XT
and 9600XT respectively but Anandtech said Oct for both. I think
realistically late October will be the time frame for both. Also, looks
like the HL2 in the box will end up being a coupon to get the game for free
when it is released.

I read the Anandtech and Hardocp previews and one of them...can't remember
which, noted that the 9600XT will be faster than the 9700 Pro and will
retail for $199 plus include HL2! Now THAT will be a bargain!

9800 XT is supposed to be launched today (October 2) and 9600 XT in a few
weeks, they won't be the same price as the Pros though, epscieally now just
after launch.

Slighty redesigned ASIC, improved memory controller, higher core/ram
speeds...

Will the version of HL2 that comes bundled with a Radeon also play on a non
ATI card?
Dave

Well that's what I hear. But that is not really what I was asking. I was
concerned that the HL2 that comes bundled with a Radeon would be customized
to abort during installation unless it detected a Radeon video card. I have
seen this before. Tim says it will be the retail version and not card
specific.

I have three computers. All with Nvidia video. I'm thinking of getting a
9600XT with HL2 but want to also try HL2 on the other two computers.

Dave

Your decision to get an ATI card for this and future DX 9 games is a good
one. But I haven't heard anything about whether or not HL2 that is bundled
with the card, will be card specific. Look at it this way, worst case is
that you will have a dynamite new card and a game that will play with it,
and you won't be able to install it on your other two PC's. In which case
you MAY have to buy another copy of the game.
