WhatsApp and Facebook will not remove fake news - Instead, the social media giants are trying to educate users on how to spot and ignore it

Fake news has become widespread, and a large part of the reason for that is that users are unwittingly distributing it through social media. Facebook and WhatsApp (which, as you may know, is owned by Facebook) have faced criticism over how they have allowed this to happen, with many suggesting that the tech giant could do more to prevent the continued propagation.

Fake news is how the tabloids make their money, so why would Facebook ever remove a source of income? Also, I've been seeing that commercial where Zuckerberg promises to do better and protect our personal info. So why would they now say they won't remove fake news?
 
I think he's just interested in the optics - he wants to appear to be doing the right thing but without actually doing the thing that matters :rolleyes:

However...

Today’s performance isn’t due to yet another data misuse or election interfering scandal. The company has reported disappointing earnings. For the first time, Facebook’s growth is stalling.

There are barely more people checking Facebook every day compared to previous quarter. Even worse, Facebook’s user base shrank in Europe. Facebook is still growing, but it’s clear that GDPR combined with a saturated market aren’t helping the company.

It's disappointing, but not unexpected, that this is all about money and not about their behaviour :wall:
