I am looking for people to enter our poll so that we can get it published.

http://www.disklabs.com - look for the 'Current Poll' section below the 'Supported Media Types'

We have the options of

Western Digital

Seagate

IBM/Hitachi

Maxtor

Currently, the results are quite shocking.

Thanks for your help.

Simon

I'm quite partial to Maxtor and WD, but I've had several bad experiences with IBM!

wot? No Samsung?

Not much of a poll without Samsung is it?

The only brand name that hasn't failed on me is Maxtor.

But I haven't ever used a Samsung drive.

And I like Western Digital.

Don't make a whole lot of sense that, does it? :D

Maxtor is definatly my favourite make of hard drive. I've had loads of them and i havent had a single problem with any of them. And there one of the cheapest around, we need more companies like Maxtor ;).

Western Digital comes in second for me :D.

Many Seagate's have failed on me. I prefer WD :D I have it on my home rig and had used it in my office desktop before I got the IMP T41 it was tehn I decided to forego the Desktop and use the IBM T41 as the desktop replacement as well.

Not that Seagate's are bad as I still have one SATA variant in my home Desktop and it is absolutely OK, but, I guess everyone has different experiences.

I have had Maxtor and WD drives fail on.

Samsung are BY FAR the best - the drives are so fast and so quiet. Well worth the extra pennies over maxtor! definatly!

That is absolutely spot on :thumb:

One thing I've learnt is that all makes will fail, it's just the luck of the draw if yours does or it doesn't.

A lot of it is to do with the factory where it was manufactured and companies will often use several different factories scattered worldwide to make their products.

Chris, you can't say Samsung are definitely better, you just can't. In your experience, maybe they are cos you ain't had one go tits up on you yet but just wait until a Samsung drive fails on you.

You may have a different POV then.

Think about it, you liked Aria as a supplier. They mess you around once, now they're the antichrist ;) The more products you use, the more experience you gain, you'll probably realise that nothing is failsafe.

I've seen people favour certain brands here and think 'Whoa, I had one or more of them fail on me, where they coming from' Like Liteon, for instance, I've had 3 failures from them in three years. But other people wil have had flawless service from their products.

One thing that will become apparent fairly quickly though, and that's which products are actually real crap. Like Q-Tec PSU's for instance.

I must admit I do favour Western Digital, they're quiet, seem solid, and they make the Raptors. It's probably an illogical favouritism though, cos I had a WD 120Gb fail on me after one month. One week to RMA, painless process.

Bought a couple of 40Gb Maxtors a few months back, they seem well made, nice and quiet, and a nice slim design.

Still, everybody proclaiming loudly THIS BRAND IS BEST! it makes for a lively debate ;)

After reading this, I'm backing up all of my data onto an external hard drive... you are making me nervous :) (touch wood!)

We could have some kind of a mass debate over favourite hard drive manufacturers :) i said i liked samsung because i have had none fail on me (have had maxtor and WD fail on me) and also they are very quiet and fast.

Worth the money :)

Got a seagate coming on thursday, shall see what thats like. 80Gb SATA

i got RAID 0 so double the chance of failure than most people!

thanks u saved me the hassle of typing there!!! I agree too! there is no favourate they are all abysmal!

im originally a quantum fan. still got my 10.2GB working, im using it for backup now. after maxtor/quantum merger, i used maxtor HDD then on coz the quantum's out of the market. never got a problem with maxtor HDD's. i would say its cost effective coz its one of the cheap HDD's that you can find on the market and it's reliable in my opinion. but if quantum was still out makin HDD, i'de still go for their product.;)
no offense but im not into WD. ive got 1 stacked up on my room, crapped out on me after the warranty ran out. though luck!
it's just a matter of choosing wich product lets you down the least.:D

This is what it all comes down to.

"Perfection" in this market means simply that it does what it is supposed to.
