Forgive me if this the wrong newsgroup for this query, didn't know where
else to go.

When opening my worksheet I receive the message "File in use, 'filename'
locked for editing..." and proceeds to give me a number of options ReadOnly,
Notify, etc. Although I am on a network (NT4) no other user has access to
this file and the file is therefore NOT open and in use.

Closing down my PC frees up the file until I save, close and want to open it
again.

Can anybody advise me what I can do? I am running OfficeXP pro and Windows
XP.

Thanks in advance,
Dave Moore

Hi Dave
I have encountered this at work, on NT4, many times.
I have found that saving to a different drive and/or file
name, usually works, or failing that a reboot.
I think it maybe a 'network' glitch, though I am
completely ignorant on networking.
Anyway hope this helps
Mathew

When you open a file in excel, it puts some "control" files into your windows
Temp folder. If excel/windows crashes, then those files aren't cleaned up.

The next time you open the file, excel sees those files and can get confused.

If you clean the windows temp folder, sometimes you won't have to reboot.

And with winnt (with excel closed), you can hit alt-ctrl-delete to pop up the
taskmanager. Go to processes and see if there are any hidden instances of excel
running.

If there are, kill them.

Sometimes one of these will stop the rebooting (sometimes you have to do/check
both.)
