hi

My computer is not working properly:

I downloaded AdAware and Stinger- it does not seem to have a virus on.
I have also done the the disk cleanup, scan disk and disk defrag.

But it seems to be worse now - I think mainly because I had to switch it off at the plug several times (it was the only way of getting any 'reaction' from the computer.
The computer stalls and wont allow me to switch it off or to open programmes (only allows me in 'save' mode). Save mode seems to be fine, but as soon as I do anything on the ordinary mode it stalls. Or it goes automatically to a blue screen with this message (if it makes any sense to you):

An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C004C4B1 in VXDVFAT (01) + 0000CC25. This is called from 0028:C182BB80 in VSD voltrack (04) =+ 00000430. Then press any key to attempt to continue or control-alt-delete to restart.

However it wont restart if I press control-alt-delete and if I 'press any key' it goes back to the desktop- but then stalls when I attempt to open anything (or leave the icons 'uncoloured'/empty if you know what I mean)
I bought the computer in 2000, it runs on Windows Me- since then I downloaded various programmes, including for my digital camera and also for the external cd drive. I have about 300 photos stored on the hard drive.
I have booked a health check with pc world for saturday but on this forum people werent too impressed with their health check...
I am a computer novice....
Can you pse help!
Thanks so much

Sounds like something's corrupted in the Operating System (OS).

Do you have an anti-virus program installed? AntiVir & Grisoft AVG are available for free online, if you don't have an AV program installed, try one of those.

But if I were you I'd ditch ME and get a copy of Win XP, wipe the drive and do a fresh install. ME is the worst system Microsft ever foisted upon us, notoriously unstable.

What are your computer specs, by the way?

And I have deleted your other identical post in another non-related thread, as this saves confusion where people are trying to help you across two threads at a time, your problem will kinda 'lose it's flow' if people are cross-posting.

Here's a reply to your other identical thread posted by GONNA-GET-U:

evh - stay away for PC world unless ur getting it for free - take it around to a local compter shop - you could also check the news paper and see if theres any adds !

sound like ur have a windows problem and might need to reinstall it or get windows XP.
or it could be a memery problem - might need some more !

And yes, stay away from PC World, you'll just be throwing money away. Save the money you would have spent and put it towards a copy of Win XP. All the help you need is probably available here, we just need more details of your system.

Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately I dont know what my specs are- as my knowledge of computers is dangerous.

I used AdAware and Stinger and the computer came out 'clean' from virusses. Is this AV that you are talking about another one that can sort out viruses that may not have been detected by AdAware and Stinger?

If there is a problem with my OS, is that necessarily a virus, or is it possible that I could have deleted something I shouldnt have?

Personally (as layman) I think my computer's hard drive is too small for all the programmes etc I loaded- what do you think?

Do you think I should delete everything and 'clean' the computer, and then re-install all programmes (with Win XP)?

Will these people at PC world know what to do and how?

Thanks

Thanks Floppybootstomp. I found a computer guy on the website 'gumtree'- this was his reply:
There could be several reasons for getting the computer act that way - a virus, deletion of system files, bad sectors on the hard drive, etc... What I can do is come and collect your computer, perform a diagnostic which takes 1- 1,5 hours and then tell you the reason for the problem. Then I can give you a price - it will include saving your information and restoring your settings the way they were before the repair. If you are not happy with the price, I'll return the computer to you and you pay nothing, because no repair has been done

The only problem is what if I never see my computer again?!!!

Where can I find my specs? then perhaps I can put it on this website

Click START > All programs > accessories > System tools > system information, it will tell you all you need to know!

This will work with XP, having not used ME myself, i do not know whether it will work...

you would ideally want to find a price BEFORE you give it to him!

He might charge £100 an hour for all you know... Ask what his rates are before you commit. He may fix your computer, but at what price?!

evh: That guy seems to know what he's talking about, but he can do a diagnostic test at your place if he's any good at all.

Don't let him take your computer away, I really can't see a need for that. And ask him what his hourly rate is, minimum charge and an expected price for the repair.

Repeat: DO NOT have anything to do with PC World, complete and utter waste of time and cash.

AdAware & Stinger are NOT anti-virus programmes, although Stinger will detect and remove specific virus's it is in no way intended as a replacement for a real AV program.

Download AVG Free and run it in safe mode.

As your system seems to run OK in 'safe mode' would indicate to me that this is primarily a 'software' problem.

An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C004C4B1 in VXDVFAT (01) + 0000CC25. This is called from 0028:C182BB80 in VSD voltrack (04) =+ 00000430. Then press any key to attempt to continue or control-alt-delete to restart.

These 'error' messages can give you a lot of information ... if you know how to 'read' them. However, 0E (and that is a zero) are notorious to decipher ... the clue is in VXD VFAT and VXD voltrack ... 04 being the error code generated ... Most, but not all, are associated with either bad drivers, corruptions and or hardware related.

I strongly suggest you take 'gumtree' up on his offer ... no fix no fee, sounds good to me.

evh:

do u not have a mate or someone that you know what could come round and sort it out?
that way u have that little bit of trust, floppybootstomp is rite dont let the guy take your pc away. only let him do anything in your presence. and with your consent. ask him be4 hand how much it will cost.
i reckon anything more than two scores is too much.

but find some1 u know that can do it for free, prehaps there is someone on this site that is local to you?

Sounds very much like a corrupt .dll file to me.

Do you actually have a CD of Windows ME? If so PM me and i'l give you my phonenumber. Then i'l talk you through the process of restoring your registry etc and sorting out your probs.

Why?

Cause i'm a nice guy :)

No offence but I wouldn't let ANYONE take your computer away...especially someone from a forum that you don't know. Would you do the same with your car??? Thought not ;)
